Speight will line up in the Canberra Vikings starting XV just two weeks after returning from the Olympics, where he was a part of the Australian sevens extended squad.

Cheika will use the Rugby Championship bye weekend to evaluate the form of several players on the fringe of Wallabies duties after back-to-back losses against New Zealand.

It's understood Speight is on the radar and will be included in the Wallabies squad when players return to the Australian camp on Sunday night.

The Vikings' clash against the NSW Country Eagles will give several players a chance to press their claims for a international call-up, including lock Rory Arnold and Brumbies-bound Eagles back Kyle Godwin.

Speight played just five Super Rugby games this year after signing a flexible contract to spend most of the year with the Australian sevens team.

His Olympic bid was hindered by injuries and the flying Fijian will wear headgear for the rest of the year after cracking his skull while playing for the Brumbies in March.

But the Wallabies desire for specialist wingers and Speight's two-try performance from the Vikings bench last weekend has him primed to return to Australian gold.

Several other Vikings players could come into Wallabies calculations as Cheika uses the third-tier competition to gauge player fitness and form.

Locks Arnold and Sam Carter were left out of the initial Wallabies squad last month, while prop Allan Alaalatoa is back in Canberra to get game time to boost his hopes of more international action after making his Test debut two weeks ago.

Carter was named the Brumbies best forward at the club's awards night on Friday after a season where he played almost every minute of every game.

Brumbies coach Stephen Larkham described it as one of Carter's best since making his debut in 2012.

"He took over the lineout calls this year and was very diligent there," Larkham said.

"He became one of our leaders off the field in terms of strategy and he got some really good results. We had the best lineout in the competition.

"His general game certainly improved across the park as well, so it was a fantastic year from him."

Brumbies playmaker Christian Lealiifano took home the top prize as the players' player and best back, while Tom Staniforth won the Shawn Mackay award for most outstanding young talent and Scott Fardy was the supporters' choice winner.

Staniforth had to wait almost two years between his first and second Super Rugby games, but Larkham said it was worth it.

"He had great impact and applied himself off the field so we really took a step up. He was superb around the collision areas," Larkham said.
