The Brumbies and White are still negotiating the terms of his release after he decided to quit the last two years of his deal in Canberra.

However, White’s contract had a clause in it, requiring him to give 18-months notice to the Brumbies before his departure.

The Brumbies may waiver that in negotations, should White offer to compensate the club.

If both parties fail to reach an agreement, there could be a stand-off.

White told the Brumbies on Friday he did not want to return to coach in the 2014 Super Rugby season, despite leading the team to the grand final last month.

White’s assistants Laurie Fisher and Stephen Larkham are the two candidates being considered and it is hoped one will be appointed by the time players return for pre-season training on October 14.

The Brumbies will embark on a ‘‘robust’’ search to replace coach Jake White and have declared ‘‘nothing is off the table’’ as they attempt to fill the hole left by World Cup-winner White.

The club floated the idea of Fisher and Larkham being co-coaches.

But both said the preference was for one leader and Fisher insisted there would be ‘‘no issues’’ between the duo if one is promoted and the other remains as an assistant.

The Brumbies are forming a sub-committee of four or five people to find a new coach.

Chief executive Andrew Fagan, chairman Sean Hammond, former Brumby and Wallaby Joe Roff will be part of the committee while the other spots will likely go to inaugural captain Brett Robinson and one other.

The Brumbies also want input from captain Ben Mowen and the leadership group.

White has been linked to jobs at the Cape Town Stormers and the Durban Sharks.

‘‘We’re working through what we’re going to do. We’ll have a robust look at who is out there and who we should consider, nothing is off the table,’’ Hammond said.

‘‘We want to get it right, we don’t want a band-aid solution. The program is in good shape. We have to determine what our process will be ... there are good people out there.

‘‘We have to come up with the structure that will work.’’

The Brumbies’ want to have a coach appointed by the start of pre-season training in October.

Most of the players didn’t know about White’s decision to quit until reports surfaced on social media on Wednesday night.

There are plans for a video hook up between board members, players who are in South Africa with the Wallabies and the rest of the Brumbies squad in the coming days to give the players clarification of what is happening.

Fisher and Larkham have been two of the driving forces of the Brumbies’ revival with White in charge.

Fisher is a former head coach while Larkham lead the team to Super Rugby titles in 2001 and 2004.

In White’s conversations with Brumbies officials when discussing his decision to leave, he told them he had made his position ‘‘redundant’’.

Fisher and Larkham were the hands-on coaches while White held a role similar to a director of coaching.

Fisher, who coached the team from 2005-08 before returning as an assistant last year, said he was keen for a chance to be head coach again.

‘‘Absolutely [I want to be a head coach again]. At some point in time. I’d like to be coaching for another 10 years. Do I want to be out on the field, I love it, but further down the track you have to plan your life,’’ Fisher said.

‘‘I most certainly have ambition to be a head coach again. I’m not constantly on the look out for other opportunities, but at the right time and with the right opportunity I would want to take it.

‘‘I’m confident I’ve got the skills and ability to do a good job. I think I could do a good job here, I think I’m coaching better than I ever have before.

‘‘It’s not my decision. There would be no issues [whether Larkham or Fisher] gets the job. Whichever way it goes, we’ll be working very closely together. There’s no issue there at all.’’

Despite stating his desire to return to international coaching, White’s decision to quit as a bombshell at Brumbies headquarters.

The Brumbies lost the Super Rugby grand final last month.

White missed out on the Wallabies coaching job when the ARU appointed Ewen McKenzie ahead of the South African.

It left White shattered and dejected and ultimately led to him leaving Australian rugby.
