The ARU published the Rugby Championship schedule on Wednesday night, with Tests locked in for Sydney, Perth and Brisbane.
The Wallabies' match against Argentina on September 16 was left without a venue and it is understood Canberra is on the verge of winning rights to the fixture.
It would be a major boost for the capital's rugby community after being starved of Test content for the past six years.
The government has been lobbying the ARU for the past two years in the hope of being included on the Wallabies calendar after being snubbed since 2010.
The ARU has previously opted to snub Canberra for non-traditional rugby areas of Newcastle and the Gold Coast, leaving the capital as Australia's only Super Rugby region without international games.
But bringing the Wallabies back to Canberra for a match against Argentina would fill the void after hosting Fiji in 2009 and Italy in 2010.
The September 16 match could be a part of a jam-packed schedule for Canberra Stadium, with the game in the middle of the NRL finals campaign.
The Canberra Raiders hosted two finals at Canberra Stadium this year and the Green Machine is keen to make the play-offs in back to back years for the first time since 2003-04.
Canberra Stadium is also set to host the last rugby league Anzac Test between Australia and New Zealand and three rugby league World Cup matches.
It is hoped a decision on the Wallabies-Argentina Test can be made in the coming weeks.
