Speight jokes that he's the Brumbies' "bionic man" and will set off airport metal detectors after having 20 screws put in his head to holding mesh in place that covers a crack above his eye.

But the unusual and scary fracture above his eye has done little to dampen his enthusiasm as he chases selection in the Australian sevens squad and restarts full training in the next two weeks.

Speight opted to have titanium screwed into his bone after doctors decided a metal plate would look out of place on his forehead following a head clash with teammate Christian Lealiifano in March.

It threatened to shatter his Olympic hopes and has delayed his quest for selection after putting his Brumbies duties on hold, but he hopes wearing headgear for the first time in his career will help him book a ticket to Rio.

"I'm the bionic man down my left side, I better take my scans with me so I can show people when I set off the metal detector," Speight joked.

"I have to wear headgear for the next four to six months ... the closest thing to headgear I've ever worn was when I had an afro.

"If I can get one specially made to come down as much as possible to my eyebrow, that would be good.

"The past few weeks has been tough getting up to pace with the sevens because I haven't been able to do any basic team stuff [for two months]. I can't wait to rip in."

Speight will speak to Brumbies teammates David Pocock and Scott Fardy about the best headgear options available and decide whether he can get one made to protect his injury.

Doctors peeled back the skin on the top of Speight's head to put the mesh in place to keep his Olympic dream alive. He had scans on Wednesday and was told on Thursday that he could return to training.

He will ease himself back into full contact training for the next two weeks to give his head extra time to heal, and Australian sevens coach Andy Friend says Speight is still in contention for Rio selection.

Speight will play in sevens matches in June and July, and if he's unsuccessful in earning an Olympic berth he will rejoin the Brumbies for the end of their Super Rugby campaign.

Speight, 28, has been using his injury-forced lay-off to raise money and awareness for his home in Fiji after the island nation was hit by Cyclone Winston earlier this year.

Speight and Tevita Kuridrani helped raise $26,000 for a Save the Children Fiji Appeal in February and Speight will attend a club rugby match in Sydney between St Ives and Brothers on Saturday to help raise money for Habitat for Humanity Australia.

Speight also teamed up with Specsavers in Woden last weekend to raise more money for Save the Children.

"It's humbling and I'm grateful for the support we have in Canberra. Canberrans just have a heart for giving no matter what the circumstances, Tevita and I are so grateful for that," Speight said.

"People were putting $5 and $10 notes in the buckets, not just gold coins [at Woden]. When you get injured you can get upset because you're not playing, or you can get involved in these causes.

"You get a lot more satisfaction from it ... I can't even put it into words. It's really touching the way people are so generous."
