Meet Charlie Hancock - the ACT Brumbies under-20s prop who has been playing rugby for just one year and has already cemented his place as a rising star in Canberra's junior ranks.

He also scored 99.1 on his year 12 ATAR results last week, topping the state in German Extension and making the All Round Achievers' List for attaining more than 90 per cent in 10 or more of his units.

So becoming a scrum technician shouldn't be too much of a problem for the Canberra Grammar whiz kid, who is weighing up his rugby ambitions with a potential law degree or a gap year.

"I was a bit worried about the results so it was a big relief to get them back and see that the hard work had paid off," Hancock said.

"I was aiming for an ATAR score of 98 the whole time so I'm really happy to get to 99. But I'm also really happy with the under-20s selection because I've made progress even though I've been so busy with school.

"I started off playing [Australian football], then went to rugby league and only started rugby properly this year to join my mates and now it's going really well."

The Brumbies named a 36-man under-20s on Thursday, with Hancock to join Super Rugby contracted players Rob Valetini, Ryan Lonergan and Nick Jooste.

The Brumbies have also been helping fast-track the development of some of their junior players, with prop Tom Ross and lock Darcy Swain join the Super Rugby squad for pre-season training.

The second year of the national under-20s pathway competition will start with a clash against the Melbourne Rebels on March 5.

The junior Brumbies will also play against the NSW Gen Blue side, the Western Force and the Queensland Reds, with the grand final penciled set for April 1.

"The addition of Rob [Valetini], Ryan [Lonergan] and Nick [Jooste] will boost the ranks and there are a number of these players who will be knocking on the door of Australian under-20 selection later this year," said Brumbies pathway coach Russell Ingram.

Hancock, a 108 kilogram loosehead prop, is just keen to get as much experience as he can to continue his rapid rise.

"I've had to work a lot on the scrum because it is pretty tricky, and it's not something you know how to do. You have to learn it," Hancock said.

"I've had some good coaches along the way who have taught me a lot. There are a lot of good players in the under-20s so the best way to improve is to scrum against them.

"I don't want to get too far ahead of myself, I'm still young and I know I've got a lot of work to do."

Meanwhile, the Brumbies confirmed they will play a Super Rugby trial against the Australian Barbarians at Viking Park on January 28.

The clash against an invitational side will be the Brumbies' first game of 2017 before playing against the NSW Waratahs in Mudgee on February 4 and the Brisbane 10s on February 10-11.
