Japan recruit Kota Iwamura will start his first game for the Vikings after moving to the capital for a 13-week stint to work with the ACT Brumbies.

Iwamura will return to the Toyota Verblitz to link with World Cup-winning coach and former Brumbies mentor Jake White for his Japan Top League season.

But the talented scrumhalf will be the Vikings' secret weapon for the next four weeks as their seventh premiership in the past nine years.

Iwamura got a one-on-one session with Wallabies skills coach Mick Byrne this week and relocated his base to Canberra on the recommendation of Nick Scrivener.

Iwamura joined Verblitz as a university student last year and finished the season as the club's starting scrumhalf.

The Vikings will throw him into the starting first grade role after impressive cameo's from the bench in recent weeks and are confident his limited English won't cause confusion.

"Nick Scrivener has a really high opinion of Kota and that's why they wanted to get him out here to continue his development," said Vikings coach Tim Sampson.

"He's pretty tall for a halfback and that's where they see his point of difference in Japan.

"He's got one of the slickest passes I've ever seen, which is difficult to do as a tall halfback.

"His English is reasonable, but his key words for our game plan are pretty common and he was over that pretty quickly. He's proved there's no issue there.

"He adds a lot because of his speed of delivery and I think that will suit him in this clash against Royals, it's going to be a big one."

Tuggeranong and Royals are the runaway leaders in Canberra's premier division this year, with just one point separating the sides.

Royals have scored 261 points in just four games and conceded just 34. But the Vikings, the defending premiers, are hot on their heels with 218 points scored and 39 conceded.

The mid-table battle will also be intense, with just three points between the third-ranked Gungahlin and the sixth-placed Uni-Norths Owls.

The Owls will play against the Eagles at ANU North in a massive clash for both sides.

The Owls have formed a partnership with 'Batyr' to start a positive conversation about mental health via their "one sock, one goal" campaign.

The Owls are hoping to raise awareness and money to support the charity after starting their affiliation with Batyr last year.

"It's about trying to spark that conversation and we're a prime candidate with the university link," said flanker Dave Bennett.

"We were on board last year and it's a great charity to support, we want to continue that because this is a volatile market and the sporting landscape is a good one to hit."

The ACT Brumbies women's team is within striking distance of its national championship goal after winning back to back games on the Gold Coast on Friday.

The Brumbies beat Victoria 17-3 and then backed it up with a thumping win against NSW Country 23-0 as they chase a drought-breaking title.

The Brumbies will play against Queensland on Saturday to determine their ranking before the finals start on Sunday.

Captain Shellie Millward set the tone for the big win against NSW Country, scoring inside the opening five minutes and benefitting from a well-worked set move off a line-out to crash over.

The Brumbies scored six tries on the opening day and conceded an impressive three points.
