Malone has been recruited to Michael Cheika's coaching staff to make sure goal kicking doesn't become the Wallabies' Achilles heel in England.

The first curve ball was getting used to the ball to be used at the tournament and second was introducing sledging sessions to test the nerve of the team's kickers.

"We've been trying to build up environments at training to put them under a bit more pressure, make them kick a goal to win something," Malone said.

"We've been working on that … I'll allow them to get stuck into each other or just set scenarios.

"There's no etiquette … I like people to kick under fatigue so we can get as close to game situations as we can."

Malone joined the Wallabies at their training camp in the US, but has been working behind the scenes for months with Australia's sharpshooters.

World Rugby will use a new ball design at the World Cup, different to the one the players are used to in Super Rugby and Australia's Test matches.

It is designed for players who have an upright kicking style, rather than the rugby league technique used by most Wallabies.

"But the ball's fine. I'm probably used to it because it's a bit more like the old Heineken Cup ball," Malone said.

"You've got to do things a little bit differently and there's probably a different sweet spot. But we've been kicking them for a week so that won't be an excuse."

Australian rugby has struggled to find a reliable goal kicker in recent years and the significance is magnified in a tournament where tries are a premium.

Bernard Foley is expected to get the nod to take on the kicking duties, but Quade Cooper, Matt Giteau, Kurtley Beale and even Matt Toomua could take their chances.

Accuracy has dropped to about 70 per cent in Super Rugby and the Wallabies' Tests, but Malone has no doubt Australia can turn that around in England.

Goal kicking becomes crucial when teams advance to the play-off stage, with no tries scored in the 2007 final and only four tries in the two semi-finals and final in 2011.

He said he wouldn't overhaul too much with the Wallabies' kicking styles, but rather tinker with aspects and ensure the players have the right mindset.

"They've all improved in that they now fully understand their action or what makes kicking work for them," Malone said.

"It's not about changing everyone to the way I like to do it, everyone is different.

"The reality is that yes, we probably have had a perceived weakness [in kicking]. We want to play with the ball in hand, but conditions dictate how you play over here."

Malone received the biggest cheer when the Wallabies were introduced at their welcome ceremony in Bath.

While most Australian's might not have heard of him, Malone scored 775 points in 140 Premiership games, including five seasons with Bath.

"My history in Europe is that people spend hours and hours a week working on [kicking], if we want to be the best in the world, that part of our game has to be the best practice.

"Having all bases covered in this part of the world is crucial. Over here [in England] every team has a kicking coach come in. But in Australia there's never been a real focus on it.

"What we have to do now is make sure we practice perfectly."
