Wallabies coach Michael Cheika has mixed up the team's training week in a bid to have the players in peak condition for the clash against New Zealand at Twickenham on Saturday (Sunday morning AEDT).

For the first six weeks of the World Cup, the Wallabies have split their training weeks with a day off three days before playing. But the physical toll of a tense semi-final against Argentina and a brutal schedule through the pool of death led Cheika to change things for the first time.

To give the players more time to recover, the Wallabies held only a light training session on Tuesday. Instead of having Wednesday off as usual, they will ramp up their preparation and start turning their attention to the world champion All Blacks.

"There was a lot of thought put into that by Cheik and the staff around our best week," said Wallabies captain Stephen Moore. "You don't like to plan too far ahead so I think we were waiting obviously after [the semi-final] to plan the week. Recovery is really important.

"I've really felt there's been a good urgency around that, boys have been putting in those extra hours on the recovery to make sure that tomorrow we can train as we want to, which is to get through a fair bit of work. That's something we've tried to do throughout the whole tournament – train hard."

The Wallabies are giving prop Scott Sio every chance to prove his fitness after recovering from an elbow injury that kept him on the sideline last week. David Pocock (calf) and Israel Folau (ankle) have been cleared of their lingering problems, while Scott Fardy (hip) is expected to play.

Cheika has been narrowing the focus of his squad to ensure they don't get caught up in the hype of a World Cup final. They have been meeting every morning to discuss what their goals are for the day and setting short-term goals to stay on track.

The Wallabies are also being boosted by the arrival of family and friends for the blockbuster final, resulting in a squad-wide scramble for tickets. "Most of [my family] are already over here," Moore said.

"My three sisters are living in London at the moment. I'm not sure if they deliberately planned that. Dad is over here, Mum has been over here but she's back in Australia now. She was here for the early part of the tournament and my wife and two kids are here, too.

"Most of the boys have got some family here or coming over and mates as well, which is great."
