The Brumbies fell short of their title quest in Mauritius and were left stunned by an inexperienced Western Force team in a 7-0 defeat in the championship match.

It was a bitter pill to swallow after the Brumbies won their first five games of the two-day tournament, including a 19-10 triumph against the Force in the early rounds.

An injury to back-rower Jordan Smiler added further pain to the Brumbies while Blake Enever will have a sternum complaint monitored.

The Brumbies and Force will meet again the last game of the Super Rugby season on July 16, with a finals spot likely to be on the line for the Canberra side.

Brumbies captain Robbie Coleman implored the squad to use the world club 10s heartbreak as a learning curve before turning their focus to their Super Rugby aspirations.

"I'm really gutted and it really does sting to lose to the Force and there were a bunch of things that maybe cost us. But we gave it everything they could and I couldn't be more proud of the guys," Coleman said.

"Ideally we'd have the medals, but as far as Super Rugby preparations goes a lot of boys got good minutes and we're going to be better prepared. We'll lead the way at training and when the Wallabies boys will come back into camp as well.

"Well done to the Force, they deserved that win. But we've got a Super Rugby title to worry about now so we have to push towards that and really make a run for it."

The Brumbies used the 10s tournament as important building block to their hopes of winning a Super Rugby title.

Instead of doing fitness and limited training in Canberra, the Brumbies had a chance to play against teams from Africa, France, Italy and England to hone their skills.

It was also an opportunity for players to press their claims for more Super Rugby game time over the next month in the Brumbies' last three games of the year.

They currently sit behind the NSW Waratahs on the Australian conference ladder and need to win games against the Queensland Reds, Auckland Blues and the Force to book a ticket to the play-offs.

Smiler's knee injury on his birthday was a cruel blow to the Brumbies' back-row stocks, with star flanker David Pocock also on the sideline for at least the next month with a fractured eye socket.

"I still think everything is positive. The disappointing thing is Jordy being out for a few weeks, but we came to a beautiful part of the world and got some good games under our belt," said coach Dan McKellar.

"It's really disappointing for Jordy, he's such a popular member of the group and rips in. But he'll be back in a couple of weeks and there's a chance for someone like Michael Wells or Ben Hyne to step up.

"We just couldn't break the Force's line and the times we did, we didn't capitalise. You've got to give credit to the Force.

"The positives far outweigh the disappointment of losing that final."

The Brumbies are keen to return to Mauritius and breakthrough for a title having lost the final in 2014 and this year.

Organisers are set to lock in June 17-18 as dates for next year's event and the Brumbies are keen to use the fixtures as a mid-year refresher for non-Wallabies players.

The 10s format allows the Brumbies to throw players from all positions into game situations, and McKellar said that was vital for giving the entire squad a chance to improve.

The Brumbies played six games in two days and although the matches are shortened to 20 minutes, the intensity is high.

"We're definitely keen to come back, there's a role for your tight five players in the 10s tournament and that sets it apart from sevens rugby, so we'd come back to Mauritius in a heartbeat."
