Eddie Jones' men defended their guts out and had almost no time with the ball as they repelled wave after wave of Wallabies attack.
Here are the player ratings for a game where the Wallabies squandered possession dominance and England showed grit to take World Cup revenge.
AUSTRALIA
15. ISRAEL FOLAU 7
Always looks dangerous whenever he gets a one-on-one chance with the defender, but needs to step up in attack to help ease the pressure on Bernard Foley if the Wallabies persist with only one playmaker.
14. DANE HAYLETT-PETTY 6
Had a mixed night with handling and getting across the advantage line. Has shown he has what it takes for Test rugby, but didn't get the opportunity to be a finisher on the wing.
13. TEVITA KURIDRANI 6.5
The hard-working centre has been solid this season without showing his spectacular best. Came back on the inside late in the first half that cost the Wallabies a try when he should have backed himself on the outside.
12. SAMU KEREVI 5.5
Definitely feels at home in the Test arena but questions remain about whether the Wallabies can win games with just one ballplayer in their back line. Was solid without being spectacular.
11. ROB HORNE 6.5
Mr Reliable in the back line and is always one of the most consistent performers in the Australian line-up. Never lets down Michael Cheika in defence or attack.
10. BERNARD FOLEY 5.5
It was an off night for Australia's best five-eighth. Missed a kick for touch from a penalty in the opening minute and it set the tone for the game. England's superb defence didn't give him room to move.
9. NICK PHIPPS 5.5
Has a motor that runs all day but Wallabies back line needs speed of service from the base of rucks to use their strengths against England. Got caught a couple of times with the ball at the back of a ruck.
8. SEAN MCMAHON 6.5
Had a mixed game starting at No. 8 to replace the injured David Pocock. Didn't have the presence at the breakdown that Pocock has, but made up for it with his around-the-field play.
7. MICHAEL HOOPER 7.5
Hooper is always Australia's top man with his hands all over the game at the breakdown, in attack and defence. He's always there when the Wallabies need him and got through a mountain of work with some strong runs. Had more of a presence at the breakdown without David Pocock.
6. SCOTT FARDY 6
Another strong game in the lineout but wasn't his usual menacing self at the breakdown. England took him out of the game and Fardy made a couple of handling errors. Went within a whisker of scoring in the second half and had he got it down, it would have turned the game.
5. SAM CARTER 5.5
Came into the lineout to strengthen it up after Rob Simmons was dropped and did his job well. The lineout functioned well in both attack and defence.
4. RORY ARNOLD 5.5
Has taken his opportunities in international rugby but a cut on his face in the first half limited his impact. Still finding his feet in a gold jersey after two Tests.
3. SEKOPE KEPU 5.5
It's always a tough time against the England scrum, but for the most part the Wallabies held on at set piece time. Gave away a soft penalty in the first half for pushing before a lineout.
2. STEPHEN MOORE 6
The skipper was fired up early and played on the edge to match England's physical approach to the game. Had a running battle with his opposite number.
1. JAMES SLIPPER 5.5
Was brought into the starting side to stabilise the scrum and did a solid job in a battle of the dark arts with Dan Cole. Both looked to be angling in at times and Slipper did the job he was brought into to.
BENCH
16. TATAFU POLOTA-NAU 6
Came on to replace Moore and had an immediate impact with and without the ball.
17. TOBY SMITH 5
Had the tough job of holding up the scrum on what looked to be the side of the scrum that was always in trouble.
18. GREG HOLMES 5
Held up his end of the bargain at scrum time but England still had the upper hand.
19. DEAN MUMM 5.5
Came on earlier than expected and was fired up to get stuck into the England pack. Pushed the boundaries in fighting fire with fire but now faces a challenge from Rob Simmons, James Horwill and Will Skelton for his place.
20. BEN MCCALMAN 5.5
Always a workhorse and rarely recognised. McCalman continued his impressive international form as the unheralded No.8 and replaced Sean McMahon. The Wallabies need a back-rower who can bust the defensive line open.
21. NICK FRISBY N/A
Only a brief appearance on the field but added energy late and could be thrown in for a bigger role in the final Test to try to spark something in the Wallabies' back line.
23. CHRISTIAN LEALIIFANO N/A
Will come into contention for a starting spot next weekend with the Wallabies found out for only having one playmaker in their back line. By the time he got on the field, England had set the tone for their defence and there was no room to move.
23. LUKE MORAHAN N/A
Limited time from the bench and hard to make an impact when he was eventually injected. Had one run for 12 metres.
ENGLAND
15. MIKE BROWN 6.5
Was virtually invisible because of the circumstances of the game and England being starved of possession. Was strong in defence and threw his body around the field in his usual aggressive manner.
14. ANTHONY WATSON 6.5
Chances were few and far between for England's wingers with the forwards dominating the game when the Wallabies didn't have their hands on the ball. Made sure the Wallabies' wingers didn't get any space.
13. JONATHAN JOSEPH 5.5
Great defence in the midfield as wave after wave of attack came his way. Only ran the ball twice for a total of four metres, but the game was not about England's attacking abilities.
12. OWEN FARRELL 9
Stamped himself on the game with his near-flawless kicking to set up an England victory. He only had one chance to run the ball but scored the only try of the second half to seal the win and steered the team around the field. His golden boot makes him a valuable asset to the Eddie Jones-led side.
11. JACK NOWELL 5.5
Was another England back line player who didn't get many chances to impress. Had five runs and launched himself into attack. But it was his defence on the edges that made sure Australia couldn't get around England.
10. GEORGE FORD 6
Ford was brought into the starting side to have two playmakers and team up with Owen Farrell. He did a good enough job, but it wasn't a game where he starred. Some of his kicks went straight to Israel Folau, but he wasn't made to pay.
9. BEN YOUNGS 6
Barely featured because England didn't have the ball, but was a constant voice in the defensive line telling his players where they should be and getting them out of trouble with his kicking when needed.
8. BILLY VUNIPOLA 7.5
Helped create a brick wall defence and made 18 tackles to constantly repel the Australian attack. Vunipola added to that with some trademark damaging runs in a game that gave him minimal opportunities.
7. JAMES HASKELL 8
Ran himself almost to a standstill, making 21 tackles and muscling up to show that he's well and truly worthy of international duties. England didn't really compete at the breakdown, instead opting to set their defensive line to be ready for the Wallabies' attack. It worked, and Haskell was a central figure to constantly tearing down Wallabies players.
6. CHRIS ROBSHAW 9
The former England captain came to Australia with a lot ot prove after a disastrous World Cup campaign last year. He continued his path to redemption with a man of the match performance and has silenced any critics willing to take a crack.
5. GEORGE KRUIS 6
Made 13 tackles but was rarely sighted around the field. Put his head down and did the ugly stuff to make sure England was winning the battle of the forwards.
4. MARO ITOJE 8.5
Super Maro continued his impressive international arrival and further stamped himself as a future England leader. He didn't back down in taking on his more experienced Wallabies rivals and backs up his talk with superb play. One to watch in the years to come and already a Test star.
3. DAN COLE 6.5
The master of the scrum tactics was at his best against the Wallabies again. Both he and James Slipper appeared to be angling in at almost every scrum and neither could be pinned. Their side constantly collapsed but the ball was spun out and referee Craig Joubert kept his whistle in his pocket for the most part. Cole lost his shirt after a first-half scuffle and the sight of him continues to haunt the Wallabies.
2. DYLAN HARTLEY 7
The England skipper went toe to toe with Stephen Moore and has cemented his place as the team's leader. Made 17 tackles in a gut-busting performance for a big man. But will return to England with a slice of history as the team's captain.
1. MAKO VUNIPOLA 7
The England big men toiled away under pressure close to their line and Vunipola stood tall with another 17 tackles. The entire England front row was dominant again.
BENCH
16. JAMIE GEORGE 5.5
Came on with nine minutes to go and put through the kick that led to Owen Farrell's match-sealing try. Injected energy late to give England scrum dominance.
17. MATT MULLAN N/A
Didn't have much of an impact in his 15 minutes, making just two tackles and missing another.
18. PAUL HILL N/A
Played his part in making sure England's set piece remained strong when the front-row was rotated off the field. Won a late penalty that iced the game for England.
19. JOE LAUNCHBURY N/A
Had limited impact in his time on the field with just one pass and two tackles.
20. COURNTEY LAWES 5
Did what was asked of him when he came on to replace Kruis in the second half and popped up where England needed him most.
21. JACK CLIFFORD N/A
Had a nine-minute stint on the field but rarely got an opportunity to do anything by defend.
22. DANNY CARE N/A
Care was another England replacement who came on exclusively as a defender. England barely touched the ball when he replaced Ben Youngs, but his fresh legs helped add late spark to fend off a Wallabies fightback.

Only came on with four minutes left in the game and didn't touch the ball or make a tackle.
