The Brumbies failed to land a blow as an unknown Force side caused a major boilover in the championship match, with Brad Lacey's try proving the difference between the Super Rugby rivals.

The dejected Brumbies were left to watch on as the Force started to party just days after the club's coach, Michael Foley, was sacked. It's the first piece of silverware the Force has won in the club's 11 years.

It will add extra spice to the Brumbies-Force battle at Canberra Stadium on July 16 when Super Rugby resumes. There are three regular season games left before the finals with the Brumbies to aim for revenge against the Force in the last match.

"I'm gutted. For the first five games we were the stand out team and the boys gave their all," said Brumbies captain Robbie Coleman.

"I couldn't be prouder of the team, just unfortunately a few things in the final went against us and credit to the Force for getting the job done.

"But we're really well prepared now for the rest of the Super Rugby season, we're not going to let anyone down as we go on that run to the Super Rugby season.

"We're going to learn from that, we'll be back next year and we'll go one better. But our focus now is the Super Rugby title."

The Force had just two Super Rugby players in their line-up and opted to use the tournament to blood youngsters from the Perth club rugby competition and their academy.

In contrast, the Brumbies threw in a team of Super Rugby talent with just one player who doesn't have a professional contract.

The teams met earlier in the competition with the Brumbies snatching a 19-10 win, but the Force got their redemption when it mattered most and scored from one of their only opportunities of the contest.

Making it even more painful for the Brumbies was the fact they lost the final of the world club 10s in 2014 and they'll limp back to Canberra with Jordan Smiler in a knee brace and Blake Enever nursing a sternum injury.

Smiler's injury is a blow to the Brumbies' back-row stocks, with David Pocock (fractured eye socket) already out of action for the next five weeks.

Smiler and Pocock's absence opens the door for Michael Wells and Ben Hyne to step up in the battle for Super Rugby play-off spots.

"It's definitely tough to finish like that, having beaten the Force we were quietly confident but a tight loss is a bitter pill to swallow," Wells said.
