But their immediate priority is finding a way to inject him into the game as they prepare for a high-octane battle against the Waikato Chiefs in Canberra on Saturday.

Brumbies co-captain Stephen Moore says the Brumbies need to take their game to a new level when they clash against the Chiefs, despite winning two of three games on a tough road trip to Perth and South Africa.

The Chiefs have scored 28 tries compared to the Brumbies' 19 in the opening five rounds of the season.

The Brumbies have slogged their way through recent matches, including a 25-18 win against the Free State Cheetahs to end their South African tour on a high on Sunday morning.

It was a game that had minimal opportunities for the Brumbies' outside backs, evident in Tomane's one attacking involvement for the entire game.

The NRL convert leads Australian teams with 19 linebreaks this year but he touched the ball once in the opening 30 seconds and didn't get his hands on it again for the rest of the match.

Tomane is expected to join Montpellier at the end of the year, but there was speculation last week he could opt to stay in Australia.

Brumbies coach Stephen Larkham described Tomane as world class but reiterated the team's only focus was the 2016 campaign.

"Joey is very motivated at the moment, he's done a lot of work and he's found a little bit of extra energy in his game, he's highly motivated at the moment," Larkham said.

"We'd love to have him. We've got ongoing negotiations with a number of the players at the moment and we're heavily focused on getting a result here each week at the moment.

"No one had really touched the ball or been involved [against the Cheetahs], Joey was itching to get his hands on the ball but it just didn't come his way. That happens some weeks."

The Brumbies will return to Canberra on Monday night after three weeks away from home.

They are confident they can avoid the off-field saga that will see chief executive Michael Jones return to court on Tuesday after being stood down by the club's board last week.

Jones gained an injunction against the decision and Larkham gathered the squad in South Africa to inform them what was happening before turning attention to the Cheetahs game.

The Brumbies average almost four tries per game, but their stats have been boosted by an opening round seven-try demolition that kick-started their season.

Since then they've shown they know how to grind their way to wins, muscling up to beat the NSW Waratahs, Western Force and Cheetahs. Their only loss of the season was against the Cape Town Stormers.

Ita Vaea, Aidan Toua and Ben Alexander scored tries against the Cheetahs, and the Brumbies had a five-pointer disallowed in the first 30 seconds after Tomane booted the ball down field and Tomas Cubelli pounced on a mistake.

It was ruled that Scott Fardy threw a forward pass to Tomane and play was called back.

Moore was happy with the Brumbies' ability to win by playing different styles, but conceded the players would have to go up a gear to play the Chiefs.

"It's always very tough to win here, the Cheetahs are a good team at home and they showed that. We're happy to get the win, two out of three on tour is a good result for us," Moore said.

"But we've got to get home now and go to another level when we get there. We'll be ready for a big game [against the Chiefs].

"It wasn't pretty all the time and the Cheetahs contested really well ... I was proud of the way the boys dug in and found a way to win."
