Pocock flew to Brisbane on Tuesday for scans amid fears he had suffered another season-ending anterior cruciate ligament tear in his left knee.
The Brumbies will find out on Wednesday if Pocock needs more surgery following an injury in their win against the Western Force at the weekend.
''The scans have been a bit inconclusive so I have to go back and talk to our team doctor, [surgeon] Peter Myers and the coaches to work out a way forward,'' Pocock said.
Smith will arrive in Australia next week after ending his Japanese career with Suntory Sungoliath. He has signed a two-year deal with French club Lyon with the season to start in September. Smith will spend the coming months in Australia and his manager admitted the 33-year-old would always consider helping the Brumbies if they ''desperately need him''.
''There's no question that if the Brumbies could get George Smith again he would be another revelation like he was last year,'' Kafer said.
