Half of the Brumbies squad flew to South Africa on Saturday with the rest to follow on Sunday for a two-game tour as they aim to keep their perfect start to the season intact.

The Brumbies beat the Western Force 31-14 in Perth on Friday night to stay unbeaten after the first three games of the year. It's just the second time in 11 years the Brumbies have started a season with a hat-trick of wins.

But it could have looked even better under the previous Super Rugby laws, which awarded bonus points to teams that score four tries in a game.

Officials have tinkered with the system to promote more attacking rugby, with teams only awarded a bonus point if they win by three tries or more.

The Brumbies have scored 15 tries in their first three games, including four against the Force and four against the NSW Waratahs two weeks ago.

Brumbies coach Stephen Larkham admitted there was still some confusion on the bonus-point change as his team scored its fourth try against the Force after the siren.

However, Toomua is adamant it entices teams to keep their foot on the pedal in attack.

"We're definitely aware of the way the bonus point works this year, maybe more so as playmaker and decision makers," Toomua said.

"I actually think it's a really good system. It hasn't really favoured us in the last two weeks, but to be fair I think you'll see a lot less try bonus points this year because of it.

"We got the win and we are happy with that, it would be disrespectful to think otherwise. The Force are a really strong team.

"You've got to keep your foot on the pedal in every game at every moment this year, whether you're in front or behind if you're trying to deny teams a bonus point. It's going to keep that attacking mind set."

The Brumbies blew plenty of chances against the Force after a blistering start to the game opened up a 17-0 lead after 22 minutes.

The Force muscled their way back into the contest and kept the game alive until they squandered chances of their own, with Brumbies hooker Josh Mann-Rea sealing the win with a rolling maul try after full-time.

"The beauty of this team is that we're comfortable and confident enough to play different styles of footy," Larkham said.

"If you review our games from last year and apply these new bonus point rules, we wouldn't have picked up half of the bonus points we did.

"We're aware of it. It's going to be difficult for all of the teams to get bonus points this year, there's still a bit of confusion about it."

The Brumbies opened the scoring with co-captain Stephen Moore scoring a try from a rolling maul after Force prop Pek Cowan was sent to the sin bin for repeated infringements.

They extended their lead when Scott Fardy threw a superb offload to a flying Toomua, who crashed over the line.

But the try sparked the Force into action and they charged into the contest after scrum-half Tomas Cubelli was given a yellow card for kicking the ball away after a penalty.

The Brumbies never looked in serious trouble, but the Force gave them plenty of nervous moments in a brutal encounter.

The Brumbies have only won four games in a row to start the season once since 2005. They will match that record if they beat the Cape Town Stormers next weekend.

"It's a good start for us [winning three games], we knew we had a tough start to the season," Moore said.

"This road trip is going to be a key, so it's nice to start it with a win. We're off to South Africa now, it's going to be tough at Newlands. But we've played well there before ... the Stormers are a very good team at home."
