While the focus will be on the 14 Wallabies in the ACT Brumbies squad vying for World Cup selection, depth is an essential ingredient in any Super Rugby campaign.

"We want to show there's no weakness in the squad," said lock Rory Arnold, Arnold, who at 208 centimetres is the tallest player in Super Rugby history. "It's on us all to step up and prepare for Super Rugby because we'll probably all get a crack.

"It's going to be quicker and more physical, if there's one weak link in a team, opposition teams will find it. You've got to be ready."

The Brumbies want to be known as a Wallabies factory. When former coach Jake White took over in 2012, the Brumbies had only three Australian representatives in a squad of 35.

Players like Scott Fardy, Joseph Tomane, Sam Carter, Scott Sio, Nic White and Jesse Mogg emerged from the pack to become Wallabies. Even Matt Toomua and Christian Lealiifano were yet to make their Test debut.

"A few years ago I was playing club rugby and two years later I'm on the brink of playing 50 caps for the Brumbies," Sio said.

"When you get your opportunity, you make it count. The boys know how tough it is, but we drive our squad on having guys ready to step up whenever they're needed."

The Brumbies have retained a core group of senior players, but in the off-season they lost captain Ben Mowen, Pat McCabe, Clyde Rathbone, Andrew Smith and Leon Power.

They've replaced them with the likes of lock Tom Staniforth, the former Australian 20s vice-captain, but a pub glassy just 12 months ago. There's prop Leslie Leuluaialii-Makin, who was moving grand pianos to earn a living.

Rodney Iona was training to be a carpenter and playing for the Tuggeranong Vikings before Brumbies coach Stephen Larkham offered him a professional deal.

Lausi Taliauli was playing for the Australian sevens team. Flanker Sean Doyle is a qualified electrician, but was playing in Ireland before taking a chance to be David Pocock's back-up.

Sydney first-grade star James Dargaville has been likened to retired Wallabies warrior Pat McCabe, lock Blake Enever is searching for game time after struggling to cement a place in Queensland's squad and Nigel Ah Wong is the former flanker who has transformed into a back-line weapon.

Staniforth made his Super Rugby debut last year and was so impressive he was rewarded with a two-year professional contract.

"If an opportunity comes up, that would be great," Staniforth said.

"I get to learn off some of the best players in Carter and Fardy. They teach you some things you need to know and that's a huge positive at the Brumbies.

"I think the National Rugby Championship did a good job in bridging the gap. That is going to help with nerves."
