Smith will play in his fifth Super Rugby final - a club record - when the Brumbies take on the Chiefs at Hamilton on Saturday night.

Smith retired from the Brumbies in 2010, but made a shock comeback to Australia earlier this year to fill the last roster spot.

He has the capacity to earn in excess of $1million a season, but has been playing for the Brumbies for rent and living expenses.

Although Smith believes the final will be his last game for the Brumbies, he's not ready to rule out another comeback.

''I have an opportunity to leave on a good note and to leave with a title is the way I'd like to do it,'' he said. ''I say I believe it's my last game because if I was to come back it would be under circumstances of all six back-rowers getting injured and me answering an SOS.

''I'm not getting any younger and I'm playing decent-quality football at the moment. In terms of me leaving a good legacy here inside the Brumbies organisation, I think I have [done that].''

Smith has won every individual accolade in Australian rugby - including nine player-of-the-year awards in Canberra - and was part of the Brumbies' 2001 and 2004 championship-winning teams.

The final will be his 142nd Super Rugby game and he made a comeback for the Wallabies against the Lions to earn his 112th Test cap last month.

His comeback has been at his expense. Still under contract in Japan, he accepted minimum wage with the Brumbies.

It was supposed to be a back-up role to David Pocock, but Pocock's season-ending knee injury early in the season thrust Smith back into a leading role.

He joins Stephen Larkham and George Gregan as the only Brumbies to have played in five finals.

''I wasn't guaranteed a spot when I came back, I had to earn my spot,'' Smith said.

''I've always had a winning attitude … I've had some great moments and great wins. But I'd love to win this one.''

New Wallabies coach Ewen McKenzie hasn't contacted Smith about staying in Australia to continue his Test career. Smith doesn't expect him to.

The 33-year-old will return to Japan just a week after the Super Rugby final where he will join Suntory - the club which agreed to loan him to the Brumbies.

''It's massive having George in the team,'' Brumbies captain Ben Mowen said.

''It's a special character to have in the side and guys look to him for performance. He puts guys at ease and the younger guys feel comfortable hanging around him.''

Brumbies coach Jake White jokes he'll wait until after the final before starting contract negotiations with Smith for next season.

Smith's biggest fear when he returned to Australia was tarnishing the legacy he left after a decade at the top.

He's done the opposite, enhancing his standing as arguably the world's best No.7. ''I've enjoyed being a nuisance around the ruck area throughout my career and hopefully that's no different [on Saturday],'' Smith said.
