And despite feeling like he was going to throw up at his first training session, the Queensland tradie says uprooting his life to gamble on a rugby career has been worthwhile.

Hyne will spend most of January trying to convince Brumbies coach Stephen Larkham that he's ready to make the leap into professional rugby in 2016.

The ultimate goal is landing a Super Rugby contract after giving up his day job as a carpenter to start training full-time.

"But I was surprised when the Brumbies first called me and couldn't believe the chance they offered me to start with," Hyne said.

"I've had a look at what being a professional rugby player is all about. Up until now I've sort of only trained two hours a week - one hour on a Tuesday and one hour on a Thursday.

"I've always thought that the best job in the world would be being a rugby player and I got that experience.

"The first two days I could have sworn I was almost wheelchair-bound. It was a massive difference but the body got used to it ... this is what guys do for a living."

Hyne is largely unknown outside dedicated rugby circles. The 21-year-old lock helped Brisbane City win the National Rugby Championship this year as he juggled full-time work as a qualified carpenter.

The Brumbies were impressed, and offered him a chance to join pre-season training to bolster numbers and push his case for a professional deal.

So Hyne did what any dedicated rugby player would do when a Super Rugby franchise says they're keen. He jumped in his car with his dad and drove for 13 hours and 1198 kilometres to start a new life.

"Dad did most of the driving so that was good ... the drive was good because it gave it time to sink in that I was actually moving to Canberra," Hyne said.

"I got signed off as a qualified carpenter four weeks before I came to Canberra. But I thought I'd hang up the nail bag and give rugby a crack for now. I've had a little taste of Super Rugby and now I want more."

The Brumbies finished their first stint of pre-season training last week, with players and coaches breaking away for the Christmas period.

The squad will return on January 4 for a camp at Jindabyne, with the club's World Cup representatives back in action.

Hyne, a 194-centimetre and 105-kilogram second-rower, played alongside Karmichael Hunt and Liam Gill for Brisbane City and Larkham says he's got what it takes to rise to a new level.

"You can see his dedication in his attitude on the field," Larkham said.

"He's very passionate about rugby and getting better. We've been very impressed with him in his four weeks and we're going to try to maintain a solid relationship there with him.

"He's a mentally tough guy who plays with physicality, that's what we like to see."
