The government will open the tender process for consultancy firms on Saturday and hopes to have the findings to the review completed by the first half of next year.
Sports that will be featured in the review include basketball, futsal, netball, handball, badminton, fencing, volleyball and ice hockey.
The review will also determine whether any existing facilities could be used more efficiently to cope with the growing demand on indoor sports.
ACT Minister for Sport and Recreation Shane Rattenbury said the review would provide an overarching platform to make informed decisions to benefit the region's sporting organisations.
"I think it's well needed; certainly I've heard from quite a few sports that are using indoor facilities that it is hard to get space," Rattenbury said.
"There do seem to be gaps out there, in terms of it can be hard to simply get court time.
"We've got a couple of projects in the pipeline ... but it is important we get a clear understanding of what the current situation is, what the facilities are and what the demand needs are.
"There's talk there are facilities like school halls that are perhaps not being utilised as much as they could be."
Rattenbury said with Canberra's increased population that it would be inevitable that new facilities would be required.
"The question is how fast we need to do it and where do we need to do it, is there a particular geographical area that is problematic and can we make better use of existing facilities," he said.
"They're the sort of things I want to get to the bottom of.
"I want to get down to a really specific analysis so we can make some really good decisions to make sure our sports dollar goes to the right places and we get the best bang for buck."
