Defending 254 at Blundstone Arena, the Meteors were in the hunt until the Roar scored 11 runs off the final over to finish on 7-257 and record a three-wicket victory.
A disappointed Meteors coach Andrew Dawson said the game was a reflection of his team's inconsistent season.
"The chakra and the moons weren't in alignment with us this summer," Dawson said.
"We haven't been able to gain momentum at any stage, whether it's been through form or injuries or a combination of the two.
"We batted well after losing a couple of wickets early, but our fielding was below par and our bowling group didn't hit the lines and lengths we would've liked."
New Zealand international Sara McGlashan made a welcome return with 68 from 64 balls in the middle order, while her fellow Kiwi Nicola Brown (43 from 63) and captain Kris Britt (43 from 44) took the Meteors up to a competitive total.
In better news, Meteors opener Katie Mack was rewarded for her impressive season with selection in the Southern Stars squad for next month's tour of Sri Lanka.
The Meteors take on the Roar in a Twenty20 game on Saturday.
