Some of the best ultimate frisbee competitors from across the country will converge on the national capital this weekend for the annual Brisbane-Canberra Invitational.

The tournament is a lead-up to next month's national championships in Perth.

Ultimate frisbee started in the US in the mid-1960s and has more than 5 million players, with the sport's popularity expanding across the world.

Each team has seven players per side on a field roughly the size of a soccer pitch.

Players are unable to move with the disc, with points scored when the disc reaches an opponent's end zone.

Canberra's men's representative team, Fyshwick United, is one of the longest running in Australia and is entering its 10th year.

Team organiser and player Phillip Swan said ultimate frisbee contained elements of Australian football and netball.

"It's a very athletic sport and it's a lot of fun," Swan said. "The key things that make it different from other sports is that it's self refereed.

"There's always a massive emphasis on sportsmanship.

"Everyone on the field is a referee and can make calls if you feel you've been fouled."

Fyshwick United is aiming to break through for its first national title after finishing second last year.

Leading the way will be Australian representatives Jono Holmes and Andy Jackson, while Tom MacCallum has been picked for the under-23 world championships in London in July.

Eight teams in the men's division and seven in the women's will compete at the Duntroon playing fields in Campbell on Saturday and Sunday.

The tournament runs from 9am-6pm on Saturday and 8.30am-4pm on Sunday.

A showcase game between Fyshwick United and Sydney's Colony Pillage will begin at 4.30pm on Saturday.
