Jones is tied for 33rd at four-under while fellow Canberran Matt Millar is one stroke further back at three-under in a share of 52nd after both posted two-under par rounds of 70 at The Hills and Millbrook Resort on Friday.
Victorian David Bransdon continues to set the pace at 11-under par, one shot ahead of Aaron Pike and Matt Jager.
Jones displayed plenty of rust in his first tournament of the year, but had a moment of brilliance on the par-four 15th when he drained a 15-foot putt for an eagle.
It was the highlight of an up and down round featuring four birdies and four bogies, Jones getting as high as five-under for the tournament before dropping a shot on the 18th.
He will be looking to turn around the momentum on Saturday as he chases down the leaders.
Starting his round on the 10th, Millar had three birdies on the back nine for a three-under 33 before dropping a shot on his second-last hole of the day.
Millar is coming off his first professional victory at the NZ PGA last weekend.
