The Canberra hurdler has two chances at realising her dream this year at the London athletics world championships and she's gone with a different tact to try and make it happen.

Wells is in the mix for the 400 metre hurdles and the 4x400m relay, but the 28-year-old is refusing to let the occasion get the best of her.

Instead she's keeping things as simple as she can and forgetting about placings - which could actually help clinch the first world championship medal of her career.

"The obvious goal is to run a PB at the world championships. That's as simple as I'm going to keep it this year," Wells said.

"It's always nice to talk about finals, semi-finals or placings, but I think for me if I can execute some strong races then the times will take care of themselves.

"I felt after Rio in the assessment of the season that perhaps I'd been over complicating things. Once I had a bit of a break after Rio and reassessed everything, I just wanted to get back to focusing on the process more than the outcome.

"It's really hard to do because our whole athletics careers are dictated by times, distances and numbers. It's really hard not to focus on those things.

"But for me, if I can put together strong races that have stride patterns that suit the conditions and everything like that, then the times tend to come without really thinking about it."

Wells wasn't even sure if she's lace up her spikes again after last year's Olympics but she has "ignited the flame" by changing up her training methods.

It's all paid off so far after Wells clinched a qualifying time for worlds in her third race of the season and cruised to a 10th national 400m hurdles title.

She has started like a house on fire in Europe with a fourth-place finish straight off the plane backed up by a win in Belgium.

Wells is now set to head into team camp at Tonbridge after clocking 56.21 to finish second in a 400m hurdles event in Heusden.

"That's something I'd never done before, run a qualifier so early in my campaign," Wells said.

"That was obviously a good confidence booster as well and it was nice to go into nationals knowing I didn't have to chase a time, I could obviously try for title number 10 but it gave me the flexibility to chase a medal in the flat 400 as well which I achieved.

"That was a good mental run I think to be able to run five 400s in four days. Especially going into the world championships where I'm in contention for a relay spot as well."

Wells admits it was hard watching the relay team run "so brilliantly" in Rio in her role as a reserve and she's doing everything she can to finally clinch an elusive medal.

Her focus remains the 400m hurdles but Wells has notched up some good performances in the 400m flat this season in a bid to throw herself into the mix.

"It was really tough to be a reserve because all I've ever wanted is to be an Olympic finalist or a world championship finalist," Wells said.

"It's certainly a good motivator though because I know that we could make the final of the world championships this year and we're certainly good medal contenders for next year.

"A Commonwealth medal would be a dream come true for me, absolutely."
