Canberra fighters Duke Didier and Ben Edwards are on the hunt for new opponents after Brace MMA's plans for a landmark night for mixed martial arts in the capital were scuppered.

Didier [6-1] was set to headline Brace 53 in his first light heavyweight title defence, while Edwards [2-0] was slated to face Kym Robinson for the heavyweight championship at the AIS Arena on March 3.

But the show has been postponed after an opponent for Didier couldn't be locked in and Robinson failed his pre-fight medical.

The event will now take place on May 5, and while the move could mean Didier and Edwards aren't both on the card, they both backed the decision.

"That's the fight game in essence isn't it? You've got to take these things as they come and you've got to prepare for the unexpected," Didier said.

"It is disappointing, it was going to be a good night for not just me and Ben, but for the whole Canberra fight scene.

"It was building up to be one of the biggest cards that we've had and for that to fall through or be postponed, it's disappointing. It doesn't change anything for us in our preparation, it just continues along, we just keep rolling.

"We're both happy to fight at any point from next month onwards. Whether that be Brace in May, or whether that be somewhere else, we'll just have to wait and see what we're offered."

Didier and Edwards were back at training just hours after hearing the news, adamant nothing will change ahead of what promises to be "a big year regardless" as the duo eye UFC contracts.

Didier says he wants to get back in the octagon "as quickly as possible" while Edwards wasted no time in contacting promoters about lining up a fight, having been guaranteed a UFC shot if he reaches a 4-0 record.

"I'm definitely keen on fighting for Brace again on the 5th of May, although the date is not ideal for me - I've got two weddings on the three weekends preceding it," Edwards laughed.

"We'll figure that out when it gets a bit closer. Because it's for the title, and the Brace title has a bit of prestige I definitely want it on my resume.

"Fighting is my main source of income so I need a fight. I can't go seven months between fights, so I've been talking to promoters already, just trying to organise the right date, the right opponent and the right price.

"Hopefully in the next week or two I'll have something locked in."

The Canberra pair backed Brace chief executive Kya Pate's call to postpone the event, with Edwards fearing throwing together an average card would only cheapen the product.

Government laws mean Pate's hands were tied when it came to finding new fighters to fill open slots on the card with less than a month remaining until the show.

"Losing three of the four main card fights including main events this close to the show just made the event unviable. We will reset and get these fights sorted," Pate said.

"What a lot of people may not understand is that MMA in the ACT is controlled via the government. They have strict timelines with fighter registration, we can't just replace any fighter with another last minute, registration timelines become an issue."

The card was also slated to include bantamweight champion Rhiannon "Tornado" Thompson defending her gold against undefeated Canberran Caitlin McEwen.
