Most people took their chance to stick the knife into English cricket last week after their dismal World Cup performances. But the best jab came from a Canberra rugby union tragic, who's well-timed meme went global with almost 600 retweets on Twitter and more than 60,000 likes on Facebook. Steve Lenthall couldn't help but laugh when England was bundled out of the World Cup by Bangladesh. Within minutes he created a meme which depicted AB de Villiers carrying South Africa, Brendon McCullum carrying New Zealand and ... British Airways carrying England home. "I've seen [rugby World Cup winning-coach] Clive Woodward, Brian Lara and Matt Giteau retweet it," Lenthall said. "It's done the rounds of some fairly high profile people. Other people have ripped it off ... but one of them had 60,000 likes on The Cricket Meme Facebook page. There was one similar when England got kicked out of the soccer World Cup, so it's not original. It took maybe five minutes to knock up."

Canberra Stadium hopes introducing more food and drink variety will satisfy Raiders and Brumbies fans this year after officials admitted they can't match MCG price cuts. The MCG is slashing prices this year, with pies, hot dogs and chips dropping to $4 each. Canberra Stadium is sticking to its structure with pies at $5.50 and hot dogs at $6.50 ahead of the Raiders' first home game on Sunday night. The biggest stumbling block is Canberra Stadium only hosts 20 NRL and Super Rugby matches a year. The MCG has almost 100. Canberra Stadium boss Liz Clarke said prices were offset by variety. "The feedback we were getting wasn't so much on the price, it was quality," Clarke said. "People want quality and choice so that's what we're doing, I think people will find a difference this year." The Brumbies are negotiating a new stadium deal with the ACT government. Details are still being finalised, but it's understood shifting home games to ANZ Stadium at Homebush Bay has not been talked about.

The Canberra club rugby competition will be rejigged again this year to accommodate the National Rugby Championships, but tinkering with the draw has caused division among teams. The John I Dent Cup season was cut short last year as the ARU rushed into the inaugural NRC season, which the Canberra Vikings played in. Teams played each other in a home and away series, with finals moved forward. The same format was proposed this year, but while some teams agreed, others objected and wanted more rugby for the premier competition. Teams will play 14 games this year, two more than last year, with the season starting on Saturday. First grade games on June 13 could be moved from 3.10pm kick-offs to 12.25pm in the hope club rugby players and fans will go to the Brumbies v Crusaders Super Rugby match at Canberra Stadium. There has been lingering tension about the increased paying levy structure, but it's understood clubs have been told to move on and focus on rugby.

The Brumbies are getting close to finalising at least three more player contracts in the coming weeks, with towering lock Rory Arnold and Ita Vaea on the radar for new deals. The Brumbies got a major boost last week when Scott Fardy, Sam Carter and Josh Mann-Rea all re-signed for at least two more years. Fardy could also have a stint in Japan after the World Cup, with freedom in his contract allowing him to supplement his earnings abroad after finishing Wallabies commitments and before the 2016 Super Rugby season starts. There's no movement on David Pocock's future as he continues his rehabilitation from an ankle injury, while Fotu Auelua, Jesse Mogg and Ben Alexander's deals also expire. Fardy said the Brumbies squad was keen to stick together, even if they're a mismatched group. "Every bloke in this squad is a bit random, we're all from different parts of the world," Fardy said. "That's what makes us a great team and a great environment. You can have breakfast with a Fijian [Henry Speight and Tevita Kuridrani], lunch with a boy from the country [Sam Carter] and then dinner with a coal miner [Mann-Rea]."

Basketball ACT says it would support a move to lure NBL games to Canberra or have a team based in the capital, but officials aren't willing to be lumped with the bills. The Wollongong Hawks were in talks with the ACT government to play two games in Canberra next season, but the club has gone into voluntary administration. Basketball ACT president David Leaney wants to see more professional action for the basketball community, which is booming at 7000 players and 574 teams. But the NBL's uncertainty and financial woes make it too risky for Basketball ACT to invest. "I think it's definitely worth a look to get games here, it's a good time. Canberra has shown they'll support teams in the Asian Cup and the Cricket World Cup," Leaney said. "It's got interesting potential. Would we like to see a professional team in Canberra? Absolutely. Of course we're interested. We're about grassroots basketball. We'd not look to financially back or own, but we're keen to support it and encourage the discussion." If the Hawks find a way to get back on their feet, don't be surprised if they're playing games in Canberra next season.

If there was any doubt how highly Canberra's Anna Flanagan is regarded in international hockey, a recent world ranking of the best men's and women's players should put that to rest. The Telegraph in Britain has published a list of the best 25 hockey players in the world, with Flanagan coming in at 12. She was ranked the fourth female player, which was led by Dutch star Maartje Paumen, ranked 4. Australian Kookaburras captain Mark Knowles topped the list, with teammate Eddie Ockenden at eight.
