Plenty is made about the big name players the Canberra Raiders have missed out on during their aggressive recruitment drive under coach Ricky Stuart. But rest assured, the Raiders have turned down plenty of approaches too and the coach is not interested in the club being used as a bargaining tool. While Stuart has spoken of his ambition to recruit more representative players, it's understood he didn't even entertain the idea when Trent Merrin's management rang him and asked if the Raiders were interested in the NSW Origin forward. Locker Room understands Stuart politely pointed out that Merrin's girlfriend was professional surfer Sally Fitzgibbons, who would obviously prefer to be near a beach, then asked directly again if Merrin was serious about coming to Canberra. Negotiations ended there and Merrin has since signed at Penrith. The Raiders have narrowly missed out on big-name targets Jared Waerea-Hargreaves, Kevin Proctor, James Tedesco and Josh Mansour. But they picked up handy additions too, including four with international experience: Josh Hodgson, Sia Soliola, Frank-Paul Nu'uausala and Sisa Waqa. All will be playing when the Raiders host their first home game against the new Zealand Warriors at Canberra Stadium on Sunday.
