The 24-year-old Commonwealth Games representative was among a group of Australia's best to receive a coaching session from Japanese legend Kosei Inoue.

The week-long camp at the Australian Institute of Sport's newly formed combat centre was part of the Winning Edge program designed to capitalise on medal opportunities in combat sports.

Inoue was a gold medallist in the under-100 kilogram class at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games, a three-time world champion and is now coach of a Japanese judo team ranked No.1 in the world.

Collins is ranked in the top three nationally in the women's under-70 kilogram class, but lost both her bouts at this year's Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

"Competing at the Commonwealth Games has definitely made me really want to go to the Olympics," Collins said.

"Kosei is one of the best in history so it's awesome to have him here.

"He's famous for doing uchi mata [an inner thigh throw] and has won a lot of fights with it, so I'd love to be able to do it like he can."

Combat sports account for about 20 per cent of all medals at an Olympic Games, however Australia was the only country to leave the London Games in 2012 without a medal in any discipline.

While expectations are modest for Rio in 2016, Inoue hopes the country's improvement will be on display at his home event in Tokyo in 2020.

"If there is anything I can do to help develop Australian judo for the future I want to contribute to it," Inoue said.

"I think there is a chance for medals for Australia in Tokyo 2020 and I hope our relationship can be stronger in the next six years to help make that happen."
