Making their debut under lights at Manuka, the Meteors were rolled in 17 overs for just 95, chasing Victoria's 6-160.

While Victorian and Australian skipper Meg Lanning starred with 66 from 43 balls, only two Meteors – New Zealand internationals Kate Pulford (12) and Nicola Browne (31) – reached double figures.

Having lost the three matches in their opening round to NSW before being humbled by Victoria on their home pitch, the Meteors had a frank discussion following the loss.

"The girls have had a big discussion ... they've been very honest, and they're all very disappointed with the way they batted," Dawson said.

"There's always going to be scoreboard pressure when you're going after a target like that, but the wicket's excellent and the outfield's fast – we just didn't bat well.

"We've got some talented players, but we've been like Chitty Chitty Bang Bang without really getting any momentum. It hasn't clicked yet."

Australian and Meteors fast bowler Rene Farrell began the match with a wide but then found her radar on the very next delivery to bowl Victorian opener Elyse Villani.

But Lanning then anchored the innings in an 83-run partnership with Jess Cameron (44 from 32 balls). Lanning was all class and it took a stunning one-handed diving catch from Kate Owen to dismiss her.

"We had some thoughts to try and shut her down, but we'll have to reassess that, and we've had that discussion," Dawson said. "We were probably a bit guilty of attacking too much with the ball, rather than trying to shut them down."

The Meteors made the Twenty20 final summer but have started this season against the two strongest outfits. They complete the weekend's round against Victoria at Manuka, playing a 50-over match on Saturday and another Twenty20 on Sunday.
