A lot has been written this week about Canberra Capitals basketballer Abby Bishop withdrawing from this year's World Championships, given Basketball Australia's new parental policy restricts her being able to adequately fund and care for her seven-month-old niece, Zala, who is in her full-time custody.

But meet super-mum, Canberra's Elizabeth Craven.

Craven took up powerlifting four months after the birth of her daughter, Abigail, and is now the number one female lifter in Australia across all weight divisions.

Born in South Africa, she will return to her country of origin for the world championships in June, and Abigail will be there the whole way.

"I started lifting just trying to get strong again after having a baby,'' Craven said.

"I do my own fund-raising. We'll pay for Abigail to go and my mum to come to look after Abigail while I lift. It's not easy but in the end I think I'm being a good example for Abigail as well, to follow your dreams. I feel very sad for Abby Bishop."

Craven won the Australian championships last weekend, setting national records as the 52kg dynamo lifted a total 350.5kg in her squat, bench-press and dead-lift.

Craven trains clients in her gym, Build Fitness, in the garage of her Kambah home. Abigail is often there, motivating them.

"She stands there yelling lift, lift, lift," Craven said.

"I've found myself training at 10 at night, after I've finished with my clients and after Abigail's gone to bed. Obviously motherhood comes first, then other things come around that."

Despite having a team of just four. Build Fitness also took out the best female team at last weekend's national championships.

Brumbies wear camo

The Brumbies might have missed out on a chance to get Royalty at their Anzac Day clash, but Prince William, Kate and George may still be in Brumbies colours next week. The Brumbies have organised a new strip for their historic match at Canberra Stadium on April 25.

A schedule clash prevents the Royal family from attending, but Prince William, wife Kate and son George will be presented with Brumbies jerseys bearing their names on Anzac Day.

The Brumbies want to create an electric atmosphere at Canberra Stadium for their Super Rugby grand-final re-match against the Waikato Chiefs. Both teams will attend the War Memorial on April 24 and there's even talk they'll be at the Dawn Service.

To mark the occasion, the Brumbies have re-designed their playing strip with camouflage replacing their traditional and included the Rising Sun Anzac Day logo behind the Brumbies logo on the players' chests.

Soldier On is also on board. Prince Harry is a massive supporter of Soldier On and the charity will present jerseys to Prince William, Kate and George.

The Brumbies will also have four two-up rings at Canberra Stadium and will become the first sports teams to host the four living Victoria Cross winners. The curtain-raiser will be a defence force battle between ADFA and RMC.

Teen prodigy targets Rio Olympics

Remember this name, Rohan Dhooria, when it comes to selection for the 2016 Rio Olympics.

That’s what 14-year-old table tennis prodigy and Marist College student Rohan Dhooria is targeting after taking out the NSW U18 championships. He didn’t take the easy path either, defeating the No1 and No2 seeds on his way to the final.

Despite his young age, Dhooria is already the top-ranked table tennis player in the ACT. He only trains three days a week, but steps it up to five days a week during school holidays when he takes up the paddle five days a week for two-hour sessions.

"I don’t get intimidated against older players, I think I have a stronger willpower,’’ says Dhooria. “I want to aim for the Rio Olympics.”

If he does make it to Brazil there could be a long Olympic career ahead – he will only be 16 by the time Rio rolls around.

Brichacek's breakthough

There's been a lot of media about Athletics Australia's decision to overlook Canberra sprinter Melissa Breen for funding, but Canberra's middle-distance champion Emily Brichacek has also earned her way to the Glasgow Commonwealth Games without the financial support of the national body.

Brichacek has credited the University of Canberra and distance running guru Dick Telford for setting up the John Landy scholarship program this year which is supporting and mentoring aspiring runners in Canberra.

Brichacek is studying a psychology at UC, but says the support of the program had enabled her to achieve her best and qualify for the Commonwealth Games in the 5000m.

"At the moment I'm not supported by Athletics Australia, so pretty much everything I do is self-funded," Brichacek said.

"I love it and I'm not for a minute saying I'm under-done because I choose to do this. But it makes it so much easier with [UC] support, rather than having to work late nights at a restaurant and trying to get the money you need to train, travel, get recovery and even buy new shoes."

Battering ram Auelua almost back

The Brumbies could be bolstered by positive injury news next week which could open the door for rampaging big man Fotu Auelua to make his comeback on Anzac Day.

Auelua is almost back to full fitness after a pre-season knee injury ruined the first three months of his season.

Auelua would be a huge addition to the Brumbies' forward pack, with the 120 kilogram back rower keen to make amends for his absence.

The Brumbies forwards have been hit hard by injuries at the start of the year, with director of rugby Laurie Fisher forced to call in reinforcements in Tom Staniforth and Tom McVerry.

The back line is almost back to full health. Tough as nails winger Henry Speight is about three weeks away from recovering from his broken jaw.

Star on the rise

She and her Aussie teammates had a star named after them during the week, but fast bowler Rene Farrell has confirmed she'll also be back with the ACT Meteors next summer.

Farrell took two wickets in the final against England as Australia claimed its third consecutive T20 World title last week.

The Aussie girls were rewarded in an unusual manner, with sponsors naming an actual star in their honour. Star no. 604465 in the Sydney Southern Star Catalogue is now officially named ‘Commonwealth Bank Southern Stars’.

"It was a lovely gift and hopefully we'll be able to get out as a team and see it at some stage,'' Farrell said.

New home for ACTSport?

ACT Sports House in Hackett celebrated its 30th anniversary during the week, with ACT Sports Minister Andrew Barr among the invited guests.

But the aging building may not be home to community sports for too much longer, with ACTSport and its affiliates negotiating a move to the new sports hub at the University of Canberra. The relocation could happen as early as June.

The $16million UC facility, which will also be the main home to the ACT Brumbies, is in the final stages of completion.
