The University of Canberra recruit was in Sydney to launch the women's university sevens series, where a host of players will vie for three professional contracts dangled in front of them by Australian coach Tim Walsh.

Williams admits if the new competition takes off she would eventually be leaving the sport in a better place but she has no plans to give rugby away.

Another Olympic Games appearance is the prize at the end of the road and Williams says competing against the next generation is only going to drive her towards her goal.

"That's the whole part of being a professional athlete, that hunger, that drive, and that challenge," Williams said.

"If someone challenges me and tells me I can't do it, then that gives me that drive to prove them wrong. I do that in every aspect of my life.

"Being a mechanic, [people say] 'you're a woman, you don't work on cars, that's a man's job'. [I think] 'you know what, I'm going to go out and do that'.

"I think having that attitude and having that challenge of these young girls biting on my ankles, it's definitely going to push me."

Williams was left to rue the lack of a major pathway in the wake of Australia's Olympic gold medal win but lauded the Uni 7s as "a great step forward".

The ARU and eight universities have teamed up to allow the next generation of stars to mix it with Olympians and elite athletes in a professional environment.

Williams hopes it inspires Australia's brightest young talents and shows them the dream of becoming an Olympic gold medallist is a legitimate possibility.

"This tournament could bring up the next Sharni Williams or Shannon Parry," Williams said.

"We need some forwards in there and this tournament is something I look forward to, to see the growth and see someone step up and jump into my shoes, and fill them when I leave.

"The Olympics is on the horizon but if this tournament takes off then I can hang up the boots and leave the sport in a better light."

Williams will miss the first round of the competition on World Cup duties with the Wallaroos in Ireland but she says what Canberra coach David Grimmond's outfit misses in size, they'll make up for in heart.

The 29-year-old says Australia's 15-a-side representatives will be crowded around the live stream to watch the future stars take centre stage.

"ACT are normally the underdogs, so I think the team are going to be pretty small but that's what sevens is about, being small and quick," Williams said.

"You can be as small as you want, but if you've got that ticker and that heart then you can definitely go out there and hit some people and surprise them.

"You've probably dominated them in a tackle when they think they're going to run over the top of you. Hopefully I'll see some of that happening."
