The tragic death of Australian cricketer Phillip Hughes resonated with the family of former ACT Brumbies forward Shawn Mackay, who died aged 26 when hit by a car on a South African tour in 2009. Mackay's mother Lee contacted The Sunday Canberra Times after last week's article about how the Brumbies players soldiered on just five days after Shawn's death to play and honour his memory. Astonishingly, Mackay's father, John, grew up in Hughes' hometown of Macksville and went to school with his parents, Gregory and Virginia. Watching the thousands of mourners march behind the hearse carrying Phillip Hughes' coffin on Wednesday, it's tough to think the small northern NSW town could lose two young sportsmen with links to their community in such tragic circumstances. "This terrible accident of Phillip Hughes has hit home from the moment it happened," Lee Mackay wrote in her email. "My heart goes out to the family and the cricket community. Nothing in life prepares you to lose your son in such a tragedy, my thoughts were also with all of Shawn's friends and the rugby community bringing back all the memories. One thing that can be said is that these two young sporting men will never be forgotten, both representing their country in the game they loved. Their fathers both coming from the same town of Macksville. Very close to our hearts. Thank you for not forgetting Shawn." John Mackay was a decent sportsman himself, a first-grade rugby league player with the Eastern Suburbs Roosters and Newtown Jets, playing 115 top grade games from 1976-88.
