Wells, national 100m record holder Melissa Breen and javelin thrower Kelsey-Lee Roberts all progressed to the next round of their respective events with ease at the Australian Athletics Championships at Lakeside Stadium in Melbourne on Friday.

Wells won her heat in a time of 60.08 seconds ahead of Madeline Putz from WA and NSW's Sarah Carli to have the second-fastest time in qualifying at the Australian Athletics Championships at Lakeside Stadium in Melbourne on Friday.

Lyndsay Pekin looms as the biggest challenger to Wells, topping the time sheet with 59.28 seconds.

Wells cruised through to the final 16, going through five seconds slower than her personal best to leave plenty in reserve to try and equal the record of Debbie Flintoff-King.

"Time was irrelevant today, it was just about conserving as much energy as possible,'' Wells said.

''While we were warming up we found out 25 girls had signed in, if we only had 24 there would have only been two rounds, but because we had 25 we had to go to semi-finals (on Saturday).

"As soon as I knew that, I just said to my coach (Matt Beckenham) that I would be going hard for the first six hurdles then shut it down after that.

"You kind of have to do as much as you have to to get through and save it for the final on Sunday.''

Roberts qualified for the final of the women's javelin, with her best throw of 54.75m leaving her in third place behind world championship silver medallist Kim Mickle (59.57m) and Mackenzie Little (57.60m).

Roberts easily surpassed the qualifying mark for the final of 48.00m and the B-qualifying standard of 54.00m.

The 23-year-old has been one of the biggest improvers this season and recorded a personal best of 63.92m at a meet in Canberra in February.

"I was stoked, first time in a qualifying round, so it was nice to have a run through everything,'' Roberts said.

"I was really happy with this morning's throw, it was off a bit of a shorter approach and got a good feel for it.

"Kim's going to be the one to beat tomorrow night, and I just hope everything can come together because we've had really good training leading into this competition.''

The final of the women's javelin will be held on Saturday.

Breen barely broke a sweat in winning her heat in the women's 100m in a time of 11.61 (+1.6) seconds - half a second outside of her national record.

Her main rival for the title, Sally Pearson, was just as comfortable in clocking a time of 11.48 (+2.2) seconds.

Two-time Paralympian Michael Roeger was eliminated in the heats of the men's 1500m, finishing seventh in his heat against able-bodied competitors in a time of 3:56.56.

Roeger's coach and fellow ACT athlete Philo Saunders was fourth in the same heat in a time of 3:54.35.
