Melissa Breen says Athletics Australia needs to expose good, bad and ugly

Snubbed by Athletics Australia for funding in the lead-up to Glasgow, Australian-record holder Breen admitted she underperformed at the Games, failing to make the 100-metres final. But the 23-year-old plans to contribute her strong opinion to the AA review and has called for "consistency" when the next round of funding is allocated.

Former Australian Athletics coach Chris Wardlaw will conduct a review into the team's performance at the Commonwealth Games, with findings expected in two months.

"I underperformed and I acknowledge that," Breen said. "So for the people who put these structures in place - as a team we didn't perform, we didn't get enough medals - who accepts responsibility for that? Who's left accountable? The athletes are, yes, but are the coaches and the management involved in that? Do they keep their jobs? What are their KPIs?

"I hope everyone's left accountable and this review brings out the good, the bad and the ugly of athletics and hopefully it's a shining light forward.

"Yeah, I probably underperformed a bit but, trust me, I wasn't the only one on the team who did. So I guess when they announce the new [National Athlete Support] structure they're consistent, that's all I hope for - consistency across the board."

Breen and training partner, 400-metre hurdler Lauren Wells, return to competition next month in Morocco and have been named as ambassadors for the Queanbeyan Gift, on November 22-23.

While Breen accepted sole responsibility for "falling apart" in her semi-final at the Commonwealth Games, she admitted her build-up had been shrouded in negativity.

"I was out there and I can't blame anyone else. I did it," Breen said. "But it's hard being constantly surrounded by people who don't believe, put it that way. It's tough, because when people are out there thinking you can't do it, and almost maybe wishing you don't, it's pretty hard to be surrounded by those people ... we're not emotionless robots who can switch it off.

"There's not millions of dollars in the sport. I'm not expecting that and I understand that, it's just that belief that they don't have in me and my coach Matt [Beckenham] that we can make it. So it's the [lack of] belief that hurts most."

In particular, Breen took a shot at suspended Australian coach Eric Hollingsworth, claiming she did not receive as much as a phone call after breaking Melinda Gainsford-Taylor's 20-year 100-metre record in February.

"The first acknowledgement of the record was him saying in the newspaper that [Sally Pearson] would re-break it. Did Sal re-break it? No. OK so what does that say?

"No one from Athletics Australia, not even the psychologist, the high performance manager or the head coach spoke to me after my semi-final at the Commonwealth Games ... if the boot was on the other foot, if you made it, they'd be high-fiving you. That's the support you expect, but don't get."

Breen said her self-belief had not wavered since Glasgow. She said she remained motivated to compete and plans to look at more overseas training and racing opportunities in the lead-up to the 2016 Rio Olympics, aiming to ramp-up her performances at major meets.

"I know I have the right body to run 11 seconds and the right coach. It's just finding those little things that when you go to the major [meets] it doesn't become a shock that someone gets out before you.

"In terms of the competition I need to make myself better, I need to expose myself to more, whether that's more races overseas or going to America.

"Yes, I've been around for a while, but I'm still a kid when it comes to sprinting across the world ... the last three years I've [run personal bests], I'm on the right trajectory. There's always speed bumps, it's how you respond to those."
