More than two decades after Tad Dufelmeier lit up the AIS Arena with a flurry of three-point bombs for the Canberra Cannons, his youngest son is making his mark as one of the brightest talents in Australian basketball.

Tad Dufelmeier jnr starred for the Australian under-19 team at the FIBA Oceania Pacific Championships in Wellington this month.

The 17-year-old point guard show all his scoring ability with a team-high 19 points in a 71-66 loss in the final to the New Zealand Maori side.

Dufelmeier jnr also led the Tuggeranong Vikings to the ACT premier-division title and was the leading scorer in the senior men's competition.

He will explore his options next year regarding a college basketball scholarship in the US, but is keeping his feet on the ground.

''I just want to play basketball at a high level, make the Australian teams that come up, then see where I go from there,'' Dufelmeier jnr said.

''Whatever comes my way will come.'' His talent has been passed down from his father.

Dufelmeier snr was an American import for the Cannons during the team's glory days of the 1980s and early '90s.

He was a part of the club's third and final NBL championship in 1988 and has settled in Canberra as a high school teacher.

''I think he's better than I was at the same age, but he plays a similar sort of position as what I did,'' Dufelmeier snr said.

''He was a lot better than I was, in my opinion.

''All my kids played basketball, so they've all followed in my footsteps.''

His daughter Bianca is in her third year on a basketball scholarship in the US at the University of Alabama.

The 183-centimetre Dufelmeier jnr is the complete package in offence. Not only does he have the athleticism to penetrate inside, he also possesses a dangerous three-point shot.

''Tad's a dunker and he goes to the basket, but he also has a great range from the three-point line,'' Dufelmeier snr said.

''He goes from beyond the three-point line to score. He's got a great range from out there.

''He shoots off the dribble, great passer, and even though he's only six foot, he's a very good rebounding guard.''
