ACT Comets all-rounder Blake Dean doesn't mind what role he has at the Sydney Thunder as he prepares to train and play alongside a stack of internationals.

Dean will spend the next week in Sydney with the Big Bash League team as it prepares for the upcoming national Twenty20 competition. The 26-year-old is on a supplementary contract with the Thunder and could be drafted into the squad if there are any injuries or players unavailable because of international commitments.

He will play in four trial games for the Thunder, including an intra-club fixture with eight players from the Comets at ANZ Stadium next Thursday. Dean will rub shoulders with a wealth of experienced players, headlined by former Australia star Mike Hussey.

The Thunder also boasts hard-hitting Sri Lankan opener Tillakaratne Dilshan, leg-spinner Ajantha Mendis, English all-rounder Chris Woakes, batsman Eoin Morgan and fringe Test player Usman Khawaja.

Australia captain Michael Clarke and opener David Warner are also on the Thunder's roster.

''There's plenty of world class players there, it's ridiculous,'' Dean said. ''I'll be picking the brains of Mike Hussey and the other experienced blokes there. The coach wants us fully involved with the squad so we can learn as much as we can, and so we're part of the team and the culture that he's trying to create.''

The Thunder already has strong Canberra links, with wicketkeeper-batsman Ryan Carters and all-rounder Jason Floros on its roster.

Dean is the younger brother of Comets captain Jono Dean, who along with fast bowler Ben Oakley is at the Adelaide Strikers.

It's the third time Blake Dean has been on a supplementary list after previously being on the radar of the Perth Scorchers and the Melbourne Renegades.

The Renegades earmarked him as a potential option as an opening batsman, but he knows he'll have a different role at the Thunder.

''I'll be there mainly as a leg-spinner; that's what the coach sees me as,'' Dean said.

''Last year for the Renegades I was signed as a batting all-rounder and that's where they played me in the trial game.

''I'm an all-rounder; it just depends on the day, which one I'm better at.''

Dean will continue to play for Queanbeyan in the Cricket ACT first-grade competition.

Fellow Comets player Greg West is also on a supplementary contract list with the Thunder, but is out with a side strain.
