Canberra cricketer Jason Behrendorff picked in Australia A team to play South Africa

The 24-year-old left-arm quick was on Friday selected in the Australia A team for a brace of four-day matches against South Africa A in Townsville in August.

Behrendorff is coming off a breakthrough season for Western Australia in the Sheffield Shield and the one-day competitions, along with strong performances for the Perth Scorchers in the Big Bash League.

He was named in the Shield team of the season and earned a spot in the Cricket Australia academy where he was been based at the Centre of Excellence in Brisbane for the past month.

Behrendorff was excited at his selection after being told he was in the squad by chairman of selectors Rod Marsh and had no doubt he would be right to play after returning to bowling this week.

"I just need to keep doing exactly what I've been doing - working hard and stick to what I do best,'' Behrendorff said.

"It's just a little niggle I picked up at the end of last season, just something I'm working through to make sure I'm getting all the boxes ticked. I'll be ready to go for the series.''

Behrendorff sustained the injury during a Shield match in Brisbane against Queensland in February.

He played through the pain to remain a key part of WA's bowling attack as the Warriors drew the rain-affected final to NSW at Manuka Oval in March, the Blues securing the trophy after finishing on top of the table.

"I was a little bit restricted at first when I first got up [to Brisbane in May] and didn't do too much running,'' he said.

"I'm pretty much on top of that now and the next few weeks I'll be going at full speed.

"It's been interesting starting training much earlier than I normally would, so it's a good chance to get some strength work under my belt and rehab my Achilles.''

Behrendorff wasn't named in the Australia A squads for the four-day matches against India A from July 6-17 in Brisbane, and the one-day series from July 19 to August 2.
