Both sides got plenty of batting practice as New Zealand finished on 8-368 on Sunday in response to the CA XI's 4-325.

New Zealand opener Martin Guptill (0) and Ross Taylor (16) were the only NZ batsmen to be dismissed, while Cameron Bancroft (42) and Shaun Marsh (11) will be kicking themselves they didn't cash in on the Canberra batting bonanza.

All up, eight batsmen across both teams retired.

Usman Khawaja (111) and Joe Burns (102) made centuries for the CA XI to boost their hopes of selection in the Australian team for the first Test, while Hamish Rutherford (41), Kane Williamson (68), Brendon McCullum (58), BJ Watling (41), Luke Ronchi (39) and Mark Craig (60) did likewise for the Kiwis.

The pitch used for the two-day game was the same one from the one-day match between NZ and the PM's XI on Friday.

Manuka Oval curator Brad van Dam was ready to prepare a fresh pitch, but was told to use the same pitch to replicate the wear and tear of a Test match.

PM's XI coach Greg Blewett said having two pitches might have made a difference, but he didn't believe it would affect Canberra's ability to host international games.

"In one-day cricket we have seen some high scores here, and that is generally what people do want to see," Blewett said.

"Certainly first-class cricket, you certainly want to see more in the pitch, especially for the bowlers.

"The main problem was it didn't spin and unfortunately there wasn't much there for anybody."

Canberra product Jason Behrendorff toiled hard in both the PM's XI game and the CA XI game.

The Western Australian left-arm paceman took 1-31 off 10 overs with the red ball after finishing with three wickets with the pink ball on Friday.

"There is always needing to be a contest between bat and ball and it was a flat wicket and it was a tough slog for the bowlers, but you get that in Test cricket as well," Behrendorff said.

"You need to be able to adapt and get better at that sort of thing.

"Bowlers [who] can take wickets on flat tracks like that are worth their weight in gold, so that's where we all need to get better at that."

New Zealand batting coach Craig McMillan said both sides would have liked the pitch to have had more life in it.

"Conditions are not really what we're going to face in Brisbane, but there is still some value in the stuff we've done today," McMillan said.

"It's been tough work for the bowlers, hasn't been any turn for the spinners and at times, even though both teams have put over 300 on the board, scoring has been difficult.

"It's allowed guys with the bat to spend some time in the middle."
