It has been a dream season for Canberra products on the domestic scene, and now Mac Wright wants that run to continue as he edges closer to a Sheffield Shield debut.
Wright is one of two spinners called into Tasmania's 13-man squad alongside 17-year-old revelation Jarrod Freeman to face NSW at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Saturday.
The uncapped leg-spinner is in the frame to face a NSW outfit reeling in the wake of a Nick Winter massacre that saw the Canberra product claim 10 wickets in just his second first class game.
The only people more excited than Wright himself are his family and friends.
"They've been messaging me over the last couple of days saying I've got to let them know as soon as I know," Wright said.
"Fingers crossed but I think they're proud either way so it's really nice to have their support. There's a couple down in Melbourne, a couple at home in Merimbula, one in Canberra, and I have a few mates up in Sydney who have been asking as well.
"It gets a little frustrating sometimes but it's nice to know that they're thinking about me. At the same time I'm just trying to play it down in my head and not get too ahead of myself, but it's nice to have their recognition."
He could don a Tasmanian cap for the first time alongside a fellow Weston Creek Molonglo product in Tom Rogers, who has excelled in his maiden first class season.
Just last week Rogers ripped apart Western Australia with 4-9 and 3-48 to guide Tasmania to an innings victory.
"We didn't play any club cricket in Canberra together. I played a season of Comets with Tommy and when he came down I was stoked for him," Wright said.
"He's been playing really well, it's great to see he's taking his opportunity this year and he's playing really well. It's good to have another familiar face around the squad and it's good to see him going well."
The Blues welcome back former Test spinner Stephen O'Keefe from a leg injury sustained during his Big Bash League campaign with the Sydney Sixers.
The hosts have selected three frontline spinners with O'Keefe joining Will Somerville and Dan Fallins, meaning the pitch could favour a tweaker like Wright.
Wright has starred in the Futures League this season with 14 wickets at an average of 29.07 but he wanted to wait until he saw the SCG pitch before he got his hopes up about a Shield debut.
The youngster joined Tasmania last season on a rookie contract and says the number of coaches at his disposal and the high standard of training has been invaluable for his game.
"Being exposed to these high level games like Futures League and maybe even getting a Shield game, that exposure to the next level is just an invaluable experience and really helps your development," Wright said.
