The Meteors' finals hopes are slipping away after they lost all three games of their Women's National Cricket League series with the star-studded Victoria Spirit in Melbourne.
Sunday's eight-wicket Twenty20 defeat was the Meteors' fifth loss from six games this season.
They now have the week off to regroup and expect their injured captain Kris Britt will be fit for their crucial home series with Tasmania at Chisholm Oval from November 8 to 10.
Dawson hoped his players learnt lessons from the Spirit, which has a number of Australian Southern Stars representatives and is one of the competition favourites.
''Victoria are a good benchmark and for some players it's a learning curve, but you wonder how long it takes to sink in,'' Dawson said.
''It's important players know they have some consistency with selections and it can be hard to judge Twenty20 form. ''We'll look towards Tasmania, make assessments from there … for the second half of the season.''
The Meteors started their final game of the Victorian trip badly and never recovered from losing two early wickets, finishing with a modest total of 6-114.
It was never going to be enough as the Spirit reached the winning target with eight wickets and 21 balls to spare.
With Britt out of the game with a back injury sustained on Saturday, Rene Farrell showed why she has 48 caps for Australia top-scoring with 30 runs and bowling four economical overs for 19.
''What Kris brings to the group is huge,'' Dawson said. ''She has made some good improvements and I'm confident she'll be right for the next series.''
VICTORIA 2-115 (E Villani 44no, J Cameron 28) bt ACT 6-114 (R Farrell 30, S Moylan 20no) by eight wickets.
