Blake Dean and Comets teammate Greg West have been selected for a trial game involving the best players from the Sydney grade competition at Drummoyne Oval on Tuesday night.

The match is a chance for players to put their hand up and potentially earn a contract with the Sydney Sixers or the Sydney Thunder.

Dean did his hopes no harm with a strong display in a pre-season 50-over game against a NSW second XI, taking a few wickets with his leg-spin bowling and smashing a quick-fire half century.

However, the 26-year-old was still a bit surprised, given he has not been playing in the Sydney grade competition this season, preferring to focus on the Comets and his role as captain of Queanbeyan in the Cricket ACT first-grade competition.

''It's come out of the blue a little bit,'' Dean said. ''I haven't heard much from Sydney this year, so it's a big opportunity. They wouldn't be having a look at me for no reason.''

Dean was on the supplementary list for the Melbourne Renegades last season, but didn't get a call-up.

He is hoping to be the third current Comets player to earn a Big Bash contract for the coming season.

Hard-hitting opener Jono Dean, 29, and left-arm fast bowler Ben Oakley, 31, have both signed with the Adelaide Strikers.

''It gives you more drive to be a professional cricketer,'' Blake Dean said. ''Twenty20 is the path I want to follow.

''It shows it can be done while playing grade cricket in Canberra and people do notice players in Canberra.''

Greg West is a left-arm quick from Newcastle who has been in the Comets' system for the past two years.
