Watson will travel with the national team to Perth as he holds out hope of being fit for the third Test against South Africa at the WACA Ground, starting next Friday, November 30.
The Test vice-captain has been sidelined since he was sent home early from the Champions League Twenty20 tournament with a calf injury. He was a late scratching from the second Test in Adelaide and it was believed he could have gained match practice by turning out for NSW in its first-class match with Queensland at Manuka Oval, starting on Tuesday.
But a Cricket Australian spokesman told The Canberra Times on Friday that Watson would not play in Canberra as he would remain with the Australian squad when it goes to Perth next week.
NSW will name its squad for the Sheffield Shield match on Saturday.
Leg-spinner Cameron Boyce and all-rounder Michael Neser have been included in the Queensland team at the expense of Alex Kemp and paceman Alister McDermott.
International trio Usman Khawaja, Peter Forrest and Nathan Hauritz will all make the trip to Canberra.
