Hart booked his ticket to the individual sprint at the world championships following his gold medal victory at the UCI track cycling World Cup in New Zealand on Sunday.

But to say the celebrations were low-key would be an understatement.

"We finished up racing and it was straight into anti-doping which is the usual thing, but it took a while," Hart said.

"Cambridge is actually a couple of hours away from Auckland, so we needed to drive up there that night. We got in pretty late, ordered a couple of pizzas from room service and went to sleep for five hours, then needed to go to the airport.

"It was pretty low-key, we’re straight to training on Tuesday with a gym session. World championships are only a handful of weeks away in Poland.

"It’s only my third sprint competition that I’ve raced at a World Cup, the second being in Milton late last year where I finished fourth. I’m pretty excited to come out on top step."

One of the nicest things about Hart's triumph was undoubtedly the presence of his parents in the stands, who had made the trek to Cambridge to see their years of support come to fruition in front of their very eyes.

Hart's individual triumph came just two days after the first wheel stalwart won a silver medal as part of Australia's team sprint outfit at the World Cup and he has his eyes locked on going one better at worlds.

Backing up his individual triumph is certainly not out of the question after Hart shifted his training methods to become a more versatile rider over the past year.

The Australian squad is due to fly to Poland on February 19 before racing begins eight days later. All the groundwork has been laid, the big volume training weeks have come and gone.

While he won't get much time to bask in his World Cup gold, Hart says "this is the fun stuff".

"I’m still relishing the opportunity of learning new things, I just really enjoy racing in the individual sprint so any opportunity I get is always good fun," Hart said.

"I’ve been in Adelaide training with the Australian cycling team for the past five years, and a lot of my time has been spent focusing on the first wheel in the team sprint.

"That’s where a lot of my effort has gone, and these bigger races, I haven’t really been given an opportunity to race in something like the individual sprint until now.

"I haven’t won in a long time, so [World Cup gold] ranks right up there. That’s not to say my focus is going to shift away from the team sprint, I’m just really enjoying the opportunity and a new challenge in another event."
