Canberra trainer Matthew Dale out to ride hot streak for all it's worth

The first month of the new season has been his best start yet, thanks largely to Sydney winners Fell Swoop and Bring A Ring, and foreshadowed another strong showing at his home track.

Three-year-old gelding Bitburg is out to make it three wins in a row when he steps up in grade in a class 2 1000-metre handicap.

Bitburg was impressive when winning his first start at Canberra by almost four lengths, and backed that up with a 1½-length win at Goulburn last start.

Dale said Bitburg had plenty to learn, but expected his charge to be hard to beat.

"He's an up-and-coming horse – quite a raw horse who did a bit wrong at his second start at Goulburn and still won comfortably – he's got a lot of ability," Dale said.

"He's got a good amount of ability that should take him through the grades, but he does have to continue to learn how to race properly.

"We'll get through tomorrow and reassess but we'd like to give him another run or two before going for a break."

Dale has been almost untouchable in recent months, boasting a remarkable strike rate since the end of June. Fifteen of his past 50 runners have saluted at tracks including Canberra, Wagga, Rosehill and Randwick.

The young trainer said there was no secret to his recent success.

"We've just got good systems in place," he said. "You can go on good runs and we like to get our horses going as well as we can and then place them as well as we can. I think at the moment we're having a really good run.

"We're enjoying the success and keeping in mind the ups and downs that come in the industry."
