Smart has high hopes for High Street after she snuck up the rail to salute in the Federal Handicap (1400 metres) at Canberra's Thoroughbred Park on Saturday.

It was the four-year-old mare's second win in just six starts, which also included a third.

Having won over 1800m, Smart feels she'll develop into a nice 2000m horse and while the Wagga Gold Cup (2000m) on May 3 might come a little bit early next year's listed Canberra Cup (2000m) could be an option.

"I can't wait to get her up to 1800-2000m or further and see what she has really got," he said.

"I see her as being a city class horse in time, I'm not sure if she'll get there this prep, but the sky is the limit for her once she gets to those distances.

"I think Canberra Cup horse next year. It may be a little bit soon for a Wagga Gold Cup, but we're not going to rule that out."

High Street settled towards the rear of the field, but found a clear path up the rail to win a head-bobber on the line, just edging out Keith Dryden and Scott Collings' Heaven On Earth and Monte Majura, trained by Len Hodgson.

Smart bought her for just $14,000 and she's had a few problems, including knee surgery, which is why she's so lightly run.

The Canberra trainer went into a rare Canberra Saturday meet confident she would run well after looking good at track work during the week.

He'll look for a 1600-1800m race for her next outing.

"I was really confident going in, so was [jockey] Simon Miller. We galloped this horse the other day and just made her hit the line and she pulled up squealing and bucking," Smart said.

"That's what she was like after the race today. She could go again, that's how well she's pulled up.

"If she can win over 1400m like she did today, watch out over 2000m."
