Heyman was in San Francisco waiting to link up with the Matildas earlier this month when the tour was called off because of a pay dispute, and the FFA told her she would have to find her own way back to Australia.

Heyman has been in the US since the FIFA Women's World Cup in June, playing professionally in the National Women's Soccer League and was left without a ticket home.

The Professional Footballers' Association paid for her flight.

"Michelle's comments are another example of the Matildas being badly advised by the players' association," Gallop said.

"Michelle's on a contract with [Western] New York Flash.

"The fact is the Matildas went on strike and it's not the FFA's responsibility in those circumstances to pick up airfares."

Gallop said Heyman had earned nearly $50,000 from playing for the Matildas in the past 12 months.

That includes a base contract of $21,000 with the FFA, bonuses for playing in the women's World Cup and payments for attending national training camps.

On top of that, Heyman is paid for playing for Canberra United in the W-League and for the Flash, who she played with for about half of the US season.

"We'd love to see her earn more in the future, but I don't believe the airfare issue is one that could reasonably be one for the FFA given the action the Matildas took under the guidance of the players' association to boycott those games in the USA," Gallop said.

"If she had been in the USA playing for the Matildas, then the airfares would be a different issue, but she wasn't."

Gallop was hopeful a resolution with the PFA in regards to the Matildas, the A-League and the Socceroos would be sorted out this week.

Heyman told Fairfax Media last week she would consider making the heart-breaking decision to quit the Matildas if they don't qualify for next year's Olympic Games.

"The FFA wants us to be full-time athletes, but they pay us like we're on the dole," Heyman said.

"I look at all my school friends and they are buying houses and have all that set, and then there's me, and I have no idea.

"I'm so grateful and thankful that I get to travel the world and experience all these things, but in five years' time, I'm going to be a retired soccer player and have $20 to my name.

"If we don't qualify for the Olympics then there's a high chance of me retiring from the national team because I want things in life.

"I'm going to need a career path that's actually going to pay me a wage and something that I can actually rely on."

Heyman said she wouldn't be eligible to represent the Matildas if she accepted lucrative contracts to play in Asia rather than in the W-League, but an FFA spokesman said that wasn't the case.

Heyman's Canberra United and Matildas teammate, Ashleigh Sykes, said earlier this month that playing in the W-League had "been compulsory in the past" and was a sticking point in the players' negotiations for a new pay deal, as they want minimum pay and work conditions to apply for the W-League if that requirement remains.
