Moore also backed new Socceroos coach Ange Postecoglou and said under-siege skipper Lucas Neill should be judged on ''football content'' as the team prepares for next year's World Cup.

Rogic is struggling to get regular game time with Scottish giant Celtic and it's thought the 20-year-old needs more game exposure.

Valeri, who played in the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, has missed almost 12 months because of an ankle injury and is slowly making his comeback in Italy.

''Tom Rogic needs game time. It [going to the World Cup] still might happen but it's tough,'' Moore said.

''If he's playing every week it makes the opportunity for him more realistic, especially in terms of being a starting player. Tom's got all the attributes, he's just got to be playing.

''Carl Valeri is a fantastic player, if fit and playing. You have to be playing regular football.

''The next six months are crucial for every player who wants a spot at the World Cup - you have to play.''

Rogic's immediate future is under scrutiny. He's widely regarded as one of Australia's rising stars and showed why in a brilliant second-half cameo for the Socceroos against Costa Rica last month.

He has been linked with a move to Japan to reunite with former Central Coast Mariners coach Graham Arnold, but for now Rogic is staying at Celtic.

Postecoglou warned last month that Rogic may need to consider an urgent transfer to get game time or risk missing out on a World Cup spot.

Moore was in Canberra this week for the national institute challenge, a tournament for the under-15 players who are fighting for Australian Institute of Sport scholarships. A trio of former Socceroos captains - Moore, Paul Okon and Vince Grella - watched closely to try to discover Australia's next star.

Postecoglou will lead the Socceroos to Brazil next year after coach Holger Osieck was sacked in October.

Australia suffered 6-0 defeats at the hands of Brazil and France, leading to Osieck's demise.

The embarrassing losses also put skipper Neill in the firing line, but the 35-year-old defender retained the captain's armband for the 1-0 win over Costa Rica in Sydney last month.

''A lot has been said about Lucas and for me the focus has to be more football content. Lucas Neill did very well against Costa Rica,'' Moore said.

''He showed he could play in a manner the new coach wants. Everyone is on their toes and has to impress again. The situation with Lucas is that the opportunity is there for him to lose.

''It's about keeping the position and a lot of the time that comes down to the player.

''Anything can happen in football … it's results-driven.

''Is it a good thing that (Postecoglou is coach)? At the time, it needed to happen.''

The Socceroos' World Cup draw was announced on Saturday morning (Canberra time).
