Tennis ACT officials are in the early stages of looking at options around the capital to complement its new $27 million venue at the Canberra Tennis Centre in Lyneham.

Canberra has missed out on its bid to host Davis Cup action next year, with Tennis Australia likely to select Kooyong for the tie against the US in March.

But Tennis ACT chief executive Ross Triffitt has a long-term vision for the sport, and hopes it can be included in plans for a $700 million convention centre in Civic.

The plans would include laying an acrylic Plexipave surface at the bottom of the convention centre to allow indoor tennis exhibition events or even Davis Cup quarter-finals to be held in the capital.

The AIS Arena looms as a potential back-up, with the institute investing in a new basketball court surface and having the ability to drop in a temporary tennis court.

But if a court is included at the convention centre redevelopment, Tennis ACT would be able to attract bigger crowds of between 6000 to 9000.

It's understood management company IMG has approached Tennis ACT about the prospect of staging exhibition matches with Canberra star Nick Kyrgios.

"With the success of Nick Kyrgios and the redevelopment at [the Canberra Tennis Centre], there's been a lot of interest in bringing a lot of major event content to Canberra," Triffitt said.

"Whether that involves Nick in an exhibition-style event or our aspirations for Davis Cup and the Federation Cup, we've had some interest from organisations like IMG about what type of events can be played here that are cost effective and are easy to do.

"The venue we've built at Lyneham is all around having the flexibility to focus on a number of programs and community-based programs right up to the challenger and elite level.

"But of particular interest is potential other venues with seating in place where we could put a court in and if we're involved early enough in the process, we could include a court in the infrastructure.

"The plans that are being floated for the new convention centre, we'd certainly want to have discussions about that whether we can, underneath the temporary floors used for different events or concerts, have a tennis court at the bottom. That opens up a whole bunch of opportunities for us."

Canberra was one of the main contenders for hosting the Davis Cup next year after the major Lyneham overhaul, which includes a centre court with 4000 temporary seats and 27 courts at the facility.

It has already hosted an ITF challenger event and the next major tournament will be a $75,000 event in the week before the Australian Open in January.

But Australia's preference to play against the US on a grass court rather than Plexipave limited Canberra's chances of luring the Davis Cup to the capital.

Adding a potential indoor show-court venue to Canberra's facility list would improve Tennis ACT's power to attract bigger events or one-off matches at any time of the year rather than being limited to summer.

The ACT government has delayed its City to the Lake vision as it foots the bill for the Mr Fluffy loose-fill asbestos knockdown and rebuilds around Canberra.

That includes putting a new rectangular stadium with a roof in Civic on the backburner, but it is hoped it will be built by 2020.

The Canberra Capitals WNBL side is set to move to the existing convention centre next month as part of the government's plan to have more events in Civic.

And tennis wants to capitalise on Kyrgios' surge in world tennis as well as the new facilities.

"With the US bid for Davis Cup, we can fit 4000 seats at the Canberra Tennis Centre but ideally we could also have the flexibility for greater seats for those bigger matches," Triffitt said.

"Then we could bid for a Davis Cup quarter-final, it would give us a category of venue that adds on top of what we've got at the Canberra Tennis Centre. The two would work together."
