Businesses situated along Cape Leveque Road, including tour operators, were forced to cancel bookings and close their doors yesterday as police moved in and arrested six people who had chained themselves to a nearby road delaying a convoy of Woodside's heavy duty equipment.

This week is one of the biggest in Broome and the wider North West in terms of tourism, with the annual Broome Cup festivities kicking off on Tuesday.

Tickets for the VIP Champagne Marquee for Saturday's Cup have sold out, hotel and resorts are close to capacity and many prominent Perth fashion designers including Ruth Tarvydas, Betty Tran and Jessica Bratich will showcase their new collections at a number of well attended events throughout the week.

"This week, being Broome Cup week, is one of the busiest weeks of the year for tourism operators in Broome. The industry is currently facing many challenges and today's road block has created further and unnecessary impediments to our business," Willie Creek Pearls chief executive Tony Maio said in a statement yesterday.

According to Mr Maio yesterday's human blockade was the second time in the past 12 months protest disruption has affected operations and tours at the Willie Creek Pearls farm located north of Broome.

He told WAtoday.com.au revenue loss could be "considerable" if protest activity continued to interrupt trade during the peak tourism season which lasts for about four months of the year.

"Unfortunately being one of the busiest weeks of the year we would've had about 200 people going out to the farm," he said late Wednesday afternoon.

"Not only was access blocked to our operation, but access to the whole Dampier Peninsula, which is an extremely popular tourist destination, was being hampered by this protest activity.

"It hasn't been too bad up until now, of course it's frustrating because it stops us from accessing public roads in order to get to your business but it would be nice for a resolution to come to fruition."
