Joshua Torley, of Wanniassa, said he was ''pumped'' after running his personal best time of 33 minutes and 29 seconds.
He finished ninth overall in the 10km race, 2min 58sec behind first-placed Gemechu Woyecha.
The 13-year-old and his father, Paul Torley, were scouring the internet for records last night, with one unofficial source saying the world's fastest time for a boy of Joshua's age was 10 seconds slower.
Mr Torley, who is also Joshua's coach, said the race plan was to try to finish in under 34 minutes.
''So he's pretty pumped. He's been excited all day.'' Joshua is the current Australian champion for his age group for the 1500m, 3000m and cross-country events.
His sister Nicola, 15, finished fifth among the female runners yesterday, with a time of 39:17.
