The Canberra community went on a detective hunt last weekend to find the owners of weddings rings mysteriously left in a safe at a Belconnen vet's surgery many years ago.

And guess what? With all our readers' help, we've found Kevin and Narelle.
Vet Shannon West discovered the rings, inscribed with Kevin and Narelle and their wedding date of March 6, 1971, when he recently took over the Belconnen Animal Hospital in Weetangera.
The rings had sat in a safe for at least 18 years until Dr West arrived and discovered the combination, thought lost forever, but actually scribbled on a bit of paper stuffed down the back of the safe.
He approached The Canberra Times to help reunite the rings with their owners and it's taken less than a week.
It's a wonder the Trove website at the National Library of Australia didn't crash last weekend with our amateur sleuths out in the community soon finding an engagement notice and birth notice mentioning a Kevin and Narelle from Canberra around the right time. Ancestry.com got a good going, too.
The upshot is the rings belong to Narelle Hilton, of Calwell, and Kevin Temme, of Farrer, who were married at the Lutheran Church in Turner on March 6, 1971.
She was just 17, he was 21. They met when Narelle worked as a hairdresser at Endeavour House in Manuka and Kevin worked next door as an apprentice mechanic at Gregory's which was attached to the Shell petrol station.
The couple had two children and divorced in 1986 but remained good friends. After the divorce, Narelle gave the rings to her daughter, Melissa, a dedicated animal lover.
"Her nickname is 'Molly' like Molly from A Country Practice because animals are her life," Kevin said.
And it turns out when Melissa, also a hairdresser, was a struggling apprentice living on the northside with a lot of cats she might have, maybe could have, well, probably did, hand over the wedding rings to the then vet working at the hospital as collateral and never retrieved them.
Melissa saw the article in The Canberra Times last Saturday and texted her mum: "Were you and dad married on 6/3/71?" and that started the ball rolling.
All the readers who sent in their tips also came to the same conclusion that the rings belonged to then Kevin and Narelle (nee Jones) Temme.
"This is quite amazing," Kevin said, as Dr West returned the rings to the pair on Friday.
Narelle was also astounded to be reunited with the rings after 30 years.
"It's amazing to think I thought the rings were safe and sound in my daughter's jewellery box all these years and they've actually been having an overnight stay at a vet's. For free! I hope he doesn't charge me," she said, with a laugh.
"We're very, very thankful to Shannon. He could have done anything with them. I'm just so grateful to him and the people of Canberra to think that we weren't forgotten."
Kevin, 66, said he had more than forgiven his daughter.
"Oh crumbs, yes! There's no problem at all," he said. "It's just indicative of her love of animals, that's how I look at it."
Both Narelle and Kevin were born and bred in Canberra and a lot of people knew them, which helped track them down. Both later remarried and divorced. Kevin has since remarried again and Narelle, 63, has a long-term partner. Kevin said he was happy for Narelle to have the rings.
Narelle, who now works in aged care, hopes to eventually marry her partner. She said she might melt down the rings to make new ones. Or else just wear them as a memento.
One thing is for sure, she won't be letting them out of her sight again.
