Molly has proven to be the most popular name for dogs registered in Canberra during 2017.
As of December, there were 47 dogs in Canberra named Molly during the past 12 months, according to data from Transport Canberra and City Services.
It's the first time the name has topped the list of most popular dog names, with it previously reaching a high of second place.
Close behind in second place on the list were both Bella and Charlie, with 43 dogsregistered under each name.
Former most popular dog name Max came in third with 38, followed by Ruby with 35 and Daisy with 32.
Rounding out the top 10 were Archie on 31, Lucy with 29, a three-way tie for eighth with Luna, Rocky and Rosie all on 25, Bonnie on 24, with Buddy, Pepper and Willow tied for 10th with 23 dogs each .
Overall, there were 4368 dogs registered with Domestic Animal Services in 2017. Dogs with a name in the top 10 made up almost 11 per cent of all dogs registered.
Dogs older than eight weeks are required to be registered in the ACT.
Mawson resident Tracey Duffy is one of many people in Canberra with a dog named Molly, a nine-year-old miniature schnauzer.
"She's a very inquisitive dog and she's very loyal. She just likes to be wherever you are," she said.
"She's a very good guard dog, she'll just sit at the front door and watch people go past."
Ms Duffy came across Molly following an ad in the paper, and while the miniature schnauzer isn't her first dog, it's her first that doesn't have a double or triple-barreled name, normally reserved for pedigree dogs.
"We wanted to name her something that we could say loudly and not be embarrassed about, and it would be easy for the kids to say," she said.
"It was just a nice name and had a nice nature about it, and we were hoping that the dog would grow into that."
It's no surprise, the dog owner said, that Molly was the most popular dog name in Canberra for the year.
"When I walk around the lake [with my dog], I usually meet a couple of other dogs called Molly as well," she said.
"It's just one of those names that makes you happy when you say it."
