Max still leads the pack as Canberra's weird dog names revealed

The name has again proven to be the capital's most popular male dog name in 2015, but it was not enough to take out top prize.

Bella was registered 77 times for the city's new pooches, followed by 53 Mollys, and a mix of both male and female uses of Charlie pushed that name into the top three.

But Max, registered 44 times this year, remains in a league of its own as the ACT's favourite name for a pooch this century.

The ACT government's all-time registration records show 1783 dogs have been given the name, more than 400 more than Bella and Molly in second and third places.

Bear was the most popular left-field name this calendar year, with 32 registered, but was far from the zaniest.

Weird registered names included Alpha Romeo, Zoomie, Pinot and Chop Suey for the males, and Beegee, Esky and Minx for the girls.

For Jorge and Magda Montalvo, their one-year-old British Bulldog Max has fulfilled a dream of more than 20 years.

"Before we even got married we wanted a bulldog, and we knew it was going to be a Max," Mr Montalvo said.

The name's Latin origins, meaning greatest or maximum, were part of its appeal, he said.

After three children and a handful of other dogs, the Nicholls couple said the chance to get the breed and use the name arrived last year, and Ms Montalvo said it was a perfect match.

"He's got his name on his face basically, he looks like a Max," she said.

"He's got a very big, grumpy looking face but he is extremely friendly, he is basically my baby, and he just behaves like one, the sweetest, most beautiful natured dog."

There were 4288 dog registrations processed by the Domestic Animal Services in 2014-15. Dogs older than eight weeks must be registered.

The all-time register includes records from as early as 2000 and, as there is no requirement to de-register, includes an unknown number of dead pooches.
